I was about to splash out over £250 for a pair of Shimano S Works road shoes until I tried them on, way too tight across my feet which is a real shame as they are lovely shoes.
I am now looking at getting a pair of Sidi's, how do these size up? I see they do what they call mega for wider feet but was hoping to get into a standard pair first.

We are al different I'd say I've got wide feet but my SIDI Eagles are supremely comfy. (Rode Portsmouth to Edinburgh last year in comfort.... Well other than my bum)
You can also get wide fitted models with SIDI.
Biggest draw for me with SIDI is that you can and I have rebuilt the shoes after 3 years of abuse with a new tread and if I wanted a new carbon plate sole.

See your point but also have an opinion if I may. I have a cheap road bike (Scott S30) which rides well and is fine, last year splashed out on a Cervelo S5 Team that cost me an arm/leg, now this is stunning to ride, light, fast and SO much better than the Scott. I have just had the Sram Force groupset taken off it as just didn't get on with the unreliable double shift mechanism and have put on DA9000, so much better. No different to driving a Skoda or a Ferrari, both will get you where you want to go but one is a lot better than the other. I suppose what I am saying is you get what you pay for...
As in my first post, I tried on the Specialized S Works shoes and apart from them not fitting particularly well because of my fat feet the quality of the materials and construction was amazing, so much better than my Shimano £80 shoes.

Why the need for fitting into a "standard" pair? Whatever fits...fits. I am now looking at getting a pair of Sidi's, how do these size up? I see they do what they call mega for wider feet but was hoping to get into a standard pair first.

Did you try different sized Specialized to what you normally go for? Did you try the wide-fit version?
BPC7 I know exactly where you're coming from.
A few years back I had a cycle fit and at the same time splashed out on some custom fit Shimano (top of the range) with custom fit footbeds. I thought I had the perfect fit. Rode to Paris and was still having foot pain. I loved the look of the Spesh works and went to try them on. As much as I loved them they weren't wide enough. The bike shop recommended I go see the foot guy at Condor up the road. One look at my feet and he said the Shimano's were too narrow even though they were a custom fit. I was rather gutted after dropping £300 on a pair of shoes and fitting.
I went for the shoe he recommended (Northwave) and haven't looked back. I also have a pair of Bont's which aren't too shabby either.

Gonna try some NW on at the weekend, not so keen on the looks of the Bonts TBHA few years back I had a cycle fit and at the same time splashed out on some custom fit Shimano (top of the range) with custom fit footbeds. The only way to really know what's going to be the most comfortable shoe for you is to try as many pairs on before you make a purchase. I've found the upper of the Mavic Zxellium to be very comfortable, no internal stitching and good padding around the tongue area. Also available in a "Maxi" fit with slightly more room in the toe box if you require a wider shoe. Maybe something to consider in your search. Good luck!
