I did a search for this before but cannot find it all now. I remember reading that a German company provide superb accident/breakdown recovery coverage when travelling around Europe but cannot find the thread I read previously and who they are. Any info would be gratefully appreciated, I don't expect my MX-5 will miss a beat but I'd like to have the coverage just in case.

ADAC. You get their magazine, too. It's in German of course but I can read that passably. Good for tyre reviews etc.

How do you go about paying/joining without a german bank account? I have a Euro debit card but doesnt allow you to pay online. Guess you have to phone?

From what I remember reading in a previous thread you do call them and they put you onto an English speaking rep' who takes you through everything.

And thanks Behemoth, much appreciated

Interested in this also with a large euro trip coming....

Does any body have an idea of cost of cover for a couple of weeks?

Absolutely no point - just join for the year. I used to live in Germany for my sins and got to know them then. Shows up rip off Britain's breakdown services for what they are unfortunately. Don't be afraid to call - they are a very friendly bunch manning the phones and love to practice their gesprochenen Englisch.

Had ADAC for 2 years until I tried to get my M5 recovered from Frankfurt.

Offered me a lift back to the hotel or to the nearest BMW dealer, but wouldn't be able to do that until Monday (this was Saturday afternoon), and I was booked on the ferry home on Sunday morning. The 'executive' (I think) package I had said they'd get me home - which they wouldn't.

Driver spoke good enough English to let me know he couldn't give a st!

The issue I have is I only need it for 6/7 days, being a tight arse Northerner I dont want to pay 85 quid for a weeks cover. Cant find anyone who offers short term cover.

http://www.vehicle-rescue.com/ Got us back to the UK with a hire car after a friends Integra engine went on the way to the ring, they recovered the Integra on a lorry a few weeks later. Policy was underwritten by AXA iirc

You expected to get a ferry back on a Sunday morning having broken down on a Sat pm in Frankfurt? Did you want one of their helicopters? I would expect and accept some inconvenience in this situation.

I expected them let me get on my way home via another method (hire car, bus, train, plane, etc.) at my own cost, but also that they'd take the car somewhere and arrange to repatriate it at some point in the next few weeks.

I didn't expect them to simply tell me to sit around until Monday morning until they could take it to a local garage.

Id be very careful with the AA euro breakdown cover and read the small print.
I paid for western europe plus extra for Spain (go figure) and thankfully didn't need to use it. The cost though was around £240.00, as I've got an old car.

If you have a car over (I think) 10 years then read them carefully. All kinds of get out clauses to not sort you out. I'm pretty sure one of them was that proof of yearly servicing could be required before recovery. Fine if you have the service book, not so good if you aint.

Both cars under 10 yrs, also both have all service docs in the glove box. Read these clauses years ago.

I normally deal with Petra at ADAC as she can do it via email. She will just need your CC details.
petra.leyrer@nrh.adac.de
Evelyn.Kunz@nrh.adac.de can also help you.

I've used ADAC for several years and they've always been helpful.
