New Forks (MTB)

Guys,

Just fitting my new forks, but want to check a few things before a take a saw to the steerer.

The steerer tube on the new forks is longer than that of the old forks, which had 40mm of spacers.

I want to try a few different heights before committing and cutting the steerer to length.

To keep the full length, (which would be level with my seat) I would need another 30 to 40mm of spacers (70 to 80mm total). Is there a limit to the amount you can use?

If I want to try them lower, can I place spacers above the stem instead of cutting the tube by 10mm at a time, then realising I want it higher?

How much (roughly) to Bike shops charge for cutting the steerer tube? Knowing they've have a jig set up to do it level, rather than my cack handedness way...

I ran my old bike with the stem low and a spacer above it, no probs. You'll be fie as long as whatever combo you use extends above the steerer.

I guess spacers above the stem will be fine until you figure out how high you like your stem.

Once you are happy, you should commit and get it trimmed to your desired height, otherwise you're riding around with a big pokey hard thing sticking up above the top of your stem ready to take a chunk out of your face / head / chest etc when you have an...ahem...unplanned dismount!

Took it to the lbs to get them to cut it to the same length as the existing fork.

The distance from the crown to the dropouts is about an inch more on the new forks, so the handlebars will be a little higher anyway.

I'd this correct? Or should I get another inch cut off the steerer?
