I've recently bought a MGB GT that I'd like to use for the occasional sprint, hillclimb and possibly the occasional circuit race.
Could anyone tell me the minimum roll cage requirements for these events?

Will be defined by the championship tech regs, which normally defer to the blue book. For sprinting, the regs normally don't require a roll bar/cage for road legal cars.

six point cage with a diagonal from the drivers side top to passenger side bottom will be the minimum fora race car. sprint/hillclimb road going cars do not have to install a roll cage but it would be advisable as it can get messy without one...

I've only seen one saloon overturn in ten years of Hillclimbing; the regs however advise, but do not require, a four-point - ie main hoop, two rear braces and a diagonal - for standard production cars.

If you go up to modified production then the regs require a six-point cage. The car falls into mod. prod. if you remove anything other than the carpets from the interior, fit plastic windows, use list 1b tyres etc.

I am presently trying to get away with a five-point setup in a mod prod car 'cos I like to be awkward...

Horses for courses really, I have seen four saloon cars roll in the three years.... Even on an airfield sprint I have seen a Citroen AX roll. I would think seriously about competing in a car without a cage. It is not over-dramatisation, I am just fortunate enough to have a little knowledge of what the drivers went through after they had the incident.

Its the same as people asking what helmet to go for, and everyone says either "the best you can afford" or "whatever you want, its your head". On something like deciding whether or not to have a roll cage, you have to make your own decision but I simply would not risk it. If you can fit one then I see no reason why people should compete without one and rely on the speed and effciency of volunteer marshals.

Thanks for all the replies.
I don't think that I'd like to compete without a cage anyway I always feel more confident when surrounded by some big tubes.
I'm intending to modify the car so it looks like I'll need a six point cage. But does it have to be FIA certificated?

For sprints and hillclimbs you do not require it to be to FIA standard, but if you circuit race then I think all safty equipment (seat, belt suit cage)has to be FIA.

Make sure you buy as cage from a regonised manufacturer. I built my own and had all sorts of problems.
