I am in the process of looking at houses and found one in Blackfield on the edge of the new forest. Does anyone here know the area? I have looked at the police website and it show's that crime/anti-social behaviour etc is higher than where I am in Whiteley, but I expected that. But is still a worry. Is there anything else I should know.

Cheers

Peter

The road in/out is not the best. Some big Q's can build up at peak times. Apart from that I guess it is much like almost anywhere. Good and bad areas.

My family lived there for years, generations even.

As Paul said the road in is not the best. If you want to know anything about the local area, please feel free to contact me. I moved back there when I left the forces and have only just moved to Ashurst.

To be honest, i wouldn't buy a house there. As others have said the main road in/out is appaling, it's at the end of the A326 marchwood bypass which is like the worlds longest cul-de-sac.
Good points are it is very close to Lepe and the beach, and it is on the doorstep of the forest.
Bad points are (roads as already detailed); couple of rough areas and quite close to the refinery.
Hythe/Dibden Purlieu is probably a better proposition, but i am biased.

I live nearby (and bizarrely work in Whiteley!)
The good:

Its quiet, and the further south you get the less traffic there is, apart from traffic heading down to
Lepe when the weather is good.

You can walk into the forest, and its 2 miles or so from Lepe and Calshot, and close to Exbury and Beaulieu.

Mostly OAPs

Vaguely useful shops within walking distance, excellent bakers, new Sainsburys! post office, chemists, library, Tesco express thats just been done up to compete with the new Sainsburys.

Really decent small independent garage that does MOTs smile They do the cars from Beaulieu Garage so theres often interesting stuff floating around.

The bad:
Fawleys pretty close, most noticable by the faint rumble noise late at night (but not noticeable in-doors and I bet less noisy than the M27!)

Slight chav contingent, not too bad though.

Primary school on the exit road, can be annoying if you happen to pass at opening/closing time.

Is a little run down in places.

A326 is busy, especially passed Hythe, and also plagued by 40mph-ers in Micras and Petrol Tankers, you can however take the scenic route across the forest through Beaulieu, and the back roads up to the A35.

No decent pubs

Thanks for the replies. Rush hour traffic doesn't really effect me, I dont normally venture out until gone 9. And my wife heads off to work way before it really starts. And comes home after it's finished. I looked at the crime stats close to the plot I want to buy and it's not too bad. You cant really see the refinery from the house, but what bothers me now is that I keep reading about what would happen if Fawley blew up! I am sure it's highly unlikely but still a consideration I guess. Maybe someone with a bit more factual knowledge could fill me in with the facts.
The house I am after is everything I have been looking for, fit 9 cars on the drive, could even hold a pub club in the garden! But I want to make sure everything is right.

Try and get as far away from Heather Road as poss (pretty large stty council estate)! If you can get closer to the forest or towards Langley then you're in a better spot IMO. The Drove has some nice houses.

Hey Pete,

I've lived in the area for most of my life and work in the refinery.

It's pretty much as Ian said and like most places there's nice and not so nice areas.A326 is a PITA, on average 20min from Totton/M27. But with forest on door step we have little call for Southampton and usually venture into the forest Lymington, Lyndhurst etc.

Feel free to email me, what place are you looking at?

Rich.

I agree, we lived in Langley and The Drove, it is a very quiet road. Neither I or my family have ever had any trouble in the area. Very low crime rate.

I think it's called The New Forest Academy now but was formally Hardley School. I remember a large contingent from Heather Road and Netley View council estates and basically they were a bunch of little bullies and scum bags. However I'm sure it's a good school and I did leave 13 years ago so who knows what it's like now?

No worries, if you want any more advise drop me a little PM as I know the area very well and my folks have developed a lot of property in the area. Give me an idea or budget and spec you're looking for and I'll give my advise......for only the cost of a spin in the Lambo wink

It's not too bad. My parents live on Rollestone Road and it works for them. I live down Applemore area.

The A326 however does my head in. I would only live that far down if I worked there.
