So I was in the Pub on Friday about 6.30pm having finished the week at work off... a nice sunny afternoon for the School Fete which was going on nearby..

Chatting to the barman he told me about one of the mums from the fete who had been in earlier and had 3 vodka and tonic's, and then took a fourth away with her in a britvic bottle with orange...

..anyway just after 7pm a woman wandered in a bit squiffy, whom via glances across the pub was confirmed as the previous mum. She then proceeded to have a swift double vodka and coke, which she sipped for a bit then downed the remaining half.. and drifted off out of the pub again.

At this point one of the more local, locals said "she'l be off to drive the kids home from the Fete now"... and he wasn't joking..!!!

FCUK me are some people recless s !!!

Most amazed, astonished and angered.
Matt

She clearly has a drink problem Matt, for which she needs assistance. Preferably before she kills anyone.

I know people who've found themselves in her situation and it's a very sad state of affairs, but not one that it's fair to condemn her for, in spite of what looks on the surface like irrefutable stupidity.

Let me put it this way. If this woman was in full posession of her ability to reason, rather than being a slave to the bottle, then in all likelyhood, she'd never endanger her children and others in this way.

Or, to look at it again differently, soon, that branch of the gene pool will likely be curtailed

I think even if you look deeper than the surface it is still in fact irrefutable stupidity... Drink problem or not, surely people like this must have the reasoning to not put their own childrens lives at risk ???

Yes, of coure it's irrefutably stupid either way - I didn't deny that, but what I was trying (clearly badly) to illustrate is that Alcoholism is so powerful an affliction that it's quite capable of overriding all reason and even the otherwise unassuageable maternal instinct.

Is it really that bad.... ? as a level-headed person I find it imposible to imagine that people can become addicted to the bottle...

Presumably someone phoned the local plod Matt - or made moves to stop her driving?

.mark not that I am aware of... I was tempted, but as I didn't actually see her driving myself or know her name or vehicle I had nothing to report barring, "there's a woman left the pub and I'm told shes going to drive her kids home.."

the sad thing is, the more "local" local's didn't seem suprised by the whole event..

Believe it - maybe not someone as level ehaded and strong minded as yourself but many people who are more feeble-minded, prone to depression, suffering or recovering from a life crisis are very vuilnerable to it.

When I lived out in the country (ooh-arrrgh!) I was amazed at the number of locals in the village pub who would neck vast quantities of booze then jump into their cars to drive home. One guy boasted that he used the high verges and hedges to help steer the car (a BMW328)homewards. Never a cop in sight, except for the two local plods who were also regulars at the pub and did nothing.

Addictions come in all shapes and sizes, personally certainly nicotine and probably borderline alcohol. For chubby people it's food, for some biting their nails (yes seriously, just ask them to try stopping!).

Whole point of it is that it is not rational, there is a fine line between compassion for an adict and the fact that there has to be a boundary. In my opinion drink driving is not acceptable, I drink and often it costs me a fortune in Taxis where hopping in the car would be way easier but I have drawn my line. It would appear that she is so hopelessly lost in the bottle that she hasn't, either that or she really doesn't care, there are still a lot of people who don't.

Does anyone watch "Cold Feet"? This was one of the plot lines. Made for a very interesting storyline as her life started to fall apart due to the bottle and she ended up almost killing a child in her 4x4 (don't start!) whilst drunk.

My daughter (14) had this problem and nothing would make her stop until I (in retrospect somewhat stupidly) told her that on Jan 1st 2003 I would give her 10 quid for every nail that was over the end of her fingers.......
The word numpty springs to mind!

hmm.. I remember this now you mention it.. funny how on TV it seems unlikely and then when you see it in front of your eyes you don't believe it....

Royston Vasey = Roy 'Chubby' Brown's real name.

That very man once walked onto the stage in Cleveland in the north-east, shortly after one of those child abuse scandals and said "F***in' ell! There's a lot of you here! I thought you'd all be at home sha****g your kids! "

I used to work in a pub back in Ireland, it was in very rural area. The locals would go home pissed and the cops would say nothing, actually they would ring in advance to say they were coming.

To be honest no ever got hurt
But in some areas it is tollerated as local taxi etc are non existent

Every now and agina they would stop a few drivers but they were non locals and the locals are still doing it.
