Noobs Commute to work. Bike recommendations
Discussion
When I'm not away at events, I'm in the office at work. About 6 miles from home.
I'm 40+ now and not been cycling for 2 decades or more. I carry a few extra lbs around with me, struggle with giving up smoking, and generally not the fittest guy on the planet. Used to ride a lot - would cycle away from home until I was knackered and then have to cycle back! I used to have a 'race' bike (no idea if still called that), mountain bikes seemed new on the block back then.
The commute is approx 6 miles, largely down and back up the sides of a valley (on roads), so almost a mirror trip each way. There is a bit of a dodgy/dangerous 1.5 mile section about half way in each direction (flat but bendy) on a country lane that used to be NSL but is now 40 (although everyone still races along it). I could add a little extra to the journey so I only have to cross that road rather than use it.
Bear in mind this might be a short-lived idea (probably until the first time it rains after I've got to work), is there a good recommendation for a starter bike? I'm 6'3", 15 stone (maybe more like 16 at the mo!). Budget not a major issue, but a good value starter bike would be nice, then upgrade if I get into it more.

I was in your metaphorical shoes on Dec 31st. I work from home, so no commute, but 1500 miles later I'm absolutely loving being a born again cyclist. Does not mix with smoking, but is more addictive, so you'll be able to quit the weed easier. I cannot remember being fitter, both physically and mentally.
I would suggest going straight to a road bike (newer terminology for a racer), to make the valley hill enjoyable, and soon you'll be wanting to find a long way home on a nice afternoon, seeking out bigger hills for fun.
You'll quit the fags and drop weight easily with a tiny bit of dedication.
Invest the next few months' fag money. Go find a decent size bike shop, or a branch of Decathlon or Evans, sit on a few bikes and get measured for size. Also for the necessary helmet, shoes, *padded* shorts, jerseys etc.
If you don't buy there and then, find out for sure what sort of bike you want and fix a budget and you'll get loads of recommendations on here. The first will be a B'Twin Triban 3 from Decathlon for £300 which mixes very well with bigger branded bikes often £500-up.
