Just heard an odd noise, sounds like it is coming from the back left area of the car.

Only when moving, it is not very loud and sounds a little like the noise a small metal ball would make if being spun around in a glass! It is constant at any speed.

Wheel bearing?

Cheers

Wheels do not travel at constant speeds, so probably not ... :S

So doesn't happen when car stopped? Even when you rev?

Nope, nothing when stationary.

stone stuck somewhere in the disk/caliper? Try reversing a little and go forward.

What you describe sounds like my Box on Saturday. Started the engine and I could hear what sounded like a golf ball bouncing around inside the engine block. I also noticed some white smoke. Engine was only started for 10 secs at this point but I panicked and turned it off straight away. I convinced myself the IMS baring had disintegrated and was expecting the worst. Got the car recovered on Monday morning (as I didn't dare start it again) and taken to RPM Technik.

Anyway, long story short there was nothing whatsoever wrong with the engine, rather one of the clamps that holds the offside exhaust pipe work had corroded and snapped. The banging/knocking noise was the pipe knocking on the underside of the car. The guys at RPM diagnosed this straight away and put a new clamp set on. Car is perfect again and I'm more than a little relieved :-)

Perhaps this is what you are hearing on yours?

I'm amazed - I have exactly the same issue in my 2008 model. I thought it was PASM or a suspension issue but they found nothing.

Let me know if you find out what it is. I shall check the exhaust.

The other favourite noise is the play in the rear suspension control arms. They wear out remarkably quickly and is very common on 986/987 boxsters.

I was thinking caught stone too possibly, definitely not IMS as it drives fine and makes no other noises. Sure it is coming from the wheel area...

Reversed 20 yards, drove forward, noise for couple of seconds and gone.

Stone I am guessing, I can put the wallet away!

I have booked in with RPM next week as the ride has become unbearably harsh in my 987.

RPM did a great job on my Boxster's geo setup 2 weeks ago. Car feels great and I think you'll be in good hands, although on another thread I think you said the harsh ride was down to your Michelin Pilot Super Sports. I don't think they'll be able to fix that unless you're going to replace those right?

Thanks. My geo is spot on and was done by CoG. I removed my post about the PSS as I am not 100% sure it is the tyres. The reason for this is the ride was fine for a month after fitting the PSS. Then all of a sudden this knocking sound started when going over bumps and the ride became noticeably harsh, leading me to think there is a fault somewhere.

I'm hoping RPM can find something other than the tyres, because I don't want to have to ditch them and go back to N rated PS2s.
