Does the 2.8 engine have a 3 bolt mounting ?

(2.9 is 2 bolt)

If it does has anyone got one surplus to requirements, sell or swap for 2 bolt version ?

Hi Mike,
I'm fairly sure mine is two bolts. I took it off last year for better access to engine mounts.

Yes please......

funny you should mention XR4x4, I think that's where this came from?

Alluminium = 4kg rather than cast iron = about 400kg (maybe a little exaggerated)

stainless steel is so last year smile

that is the bellhousing, goes between engine and gearbox.

The starter motor bolts go into the three holes circled in red.

Mike, is the only difference the number of starter motor fixing points?

I've looked at these a few times and thought how nice it would be to save all that weight even if the job of fitting it might be beyond my skill level. rolleyes

I believe so, a little more checking and measuring to be done to be 100% sure, I have a spare engine and gearbox to try it on.
Ideally could do with the thin plate that goes between engine and the bell housing because I think it helps locate the starter accurately?

Shan't be taking box out just to fit this, it'll have to wait a bit but I have another little plan in mind wink

anything that makes lifting the box in and out a bit easier has got to be good, I ain't getting any younger !

Before you let the 2 bolt go, make absolutely sure the 3 bolt starter pinion is absolutely the same and, when mounted, is at exactly the same radius out from the centre of the flywheel and engages exactly the same amount.
We had a problem with a conversion (on an MG) where everything appeared to line up but it was 'slow' to start afterwards; turned out we had missed that the two pinions were slightly different in diameter and the 'new' one was just slightly too big. It would go in but put far too much stress on the starter motor which, therefore, struggled to turn the engine. curse

Thanks Maffe, did I read on another thread that you are scrapping the XR4 ?

If so could I buy the starter motor please (or be glad to swap for a 2 bolt version)?

Or, I could buy the 2-bolt starter from you as a spare, & you could pay Maffe for the 3-bolt item because I don't think the 2-bolt is any good to him.
All depends on price of course. beerbeerbeerbeer

This is the problem holding up my rebuild. I bought the alley bell housing thinking it was a striaght swap. Now needing the 3 hole starter has caused a problem. I was given 2no. 3 hole ford starters to try (not sure what they were from) but either the throw of the bendix was too short or the gear had a differing amount of teeth. I think if anything would fit it would be the XR4i starter because the I was told the bellhousing is from that car. I think the 2.9 S has the capri 2.8 flywheel and clutch which is different to that fitted on the XR4i so there is a compatability issue? I am almost at the stage of taking the engine/gearbox back out and changing the bellhousing back to the heavy cast iron one. I dont think changing the flywheel and clutch is a way i want to go just now. Has anybody fitted the alley bellhousing or seen it done on our cars? Has anybody got an Xr4i or XR4x4 3 hole starter that they can measure up for me?
