'Crossover' tyre recommendations for a MTB.

I'm looking for some new tyres, for my MTB, I'm doing a mixture of tarmac lanes, gravel, compact mud, farm tracks etc. All very flat. The tarmac is really hard work on my current knobbly tyres, but I do need a bit of grip for off-road.

So any recommendations? They must have good puncture resistance! They must be cheap! Up to £15 each is my ballpark.

I have these on one of my bikes that I use around town, bike paths, dry mud, etc.. perhaps a little more tarmac biased, but never had any issues.

Land cruisers are all right and cheap. Good enough for swinley forest anyway.

Not sure what mine are but they've got a similar tread pattern to those land cruisers, the solid ridge in the middle gives you a fairly low resistance ride on tarmac, while the lugs start to bite as soon as the ground gets softer. Works well.

Have a look at Kenda small block 8s. Ive not used them myself but I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a 2nd hand ebay bargain to try them out, they seem well suited to a variety of surfaces and because the knobs are so close together they roll quickly.
You could pick up a used pair for £30 if you shop around.

Just a quick update. Went for these Schwalbe CX Comp in the end, and I'm very pleased with them! Did a 20 mile ride over the weekend, sand, tracks, gravel, pebbles and roads, the tyres worked really well on all surfaces, rolled really well on the roads. Only £13 each! Bargain.

I have a pair of well worn Maxxis Larsen TTs which are probably perfect for what you want, can send some pictures if are interested. I'd say get a pair because they roll so well on dry, compact surfaces but you wont get a pair for £30. On that note, there is a world of difference between cheap tyres and expensive ones, the continental black chili compound and the Maxxis eXCeption series tyres are awesome and the difference between those and black ditcy finders is well worth the price...

Be aware with the Kendas that they will wear quite quickly with any road riding you do. I have Kenda Nevegals on my bike and they've been OK, but I tend to ride to the off road bits, rather than transporting the bike by car, so premature wear has been an issue. The Small Block 8s would be a better bet as a 'crossover' tyre than the Nevegals, though.

I put Schwalbe Land Cruisers on mine a few weeks ago. I'd forgotten how nice it is to ride on Tarmac with hardly any tyre noise

If you want them in a 29er, I've got a set only did one ride on them, offers not involving goats, but would love a llama.
