Help! I've just jumped into my 1999 Model 996 and although she fires straight away, she won't run. I've tried blipping the throttle , but this doesn't help. I've left her for 10 mins and tried again; same result. She has been standing a week. In the six months I've owned her, she has always started up on the button. She has been left standing for longer than this as well . Any ideas anyone?

I can't help with your problem but it seems rude to let a 1 post new boy be ignored. So welcome and I hope you get it sorted.

I would also like to welcome you!

They/we are a friendly and reasonably helpful bunch.

If you were able to give some more details, I am sure that some of the regular experts will pop in and try to help.

I would trawl through the various pages and you will see many similar requests answered in detail. Do keep faith!

Assuming you have fuel in the tank . . . (you wouldn't be the first!)

Idle control valve is stuck?

If I read/understand the symptom the engine fires but dies right away? It dies when you let the key return to the on position from the start position?

If so this points to a possible ignition switch problem. Have you tried pulling/pressing on the key (and the switch) in one direction or another? Not too much force but enough to see if improved or diminished contact helps or hurts.

I have not studied the fuses for your car but I recall years ago a Toyota engine that would start right up adn then die when the key was released. Turned out there was a fuse on the engine run circuit.

And the idle control valve as others have suggested needs to be considered too.

Good morning and thanks for the replies. There is fuel in the tank,so not that. The local dealer is not sure why she won't run either, so they are coming to trailer her away. Hopefully the cause will be something simple, or is that wishful thinking!

If your luck is like my close mate Dunnys, it will be a five minute £20 fix.

If your luck is like mine, it will be a pop down the garage to see how they are getting on with me motor; to find the engine on the floor and a couple of mechanics shaking their collective heads.

Best of luck.

Can you hear the fuel pump run when you first turn on the ignition ? I had a problem with intermittant cutting out that quickly progressed to not starting (but occasionally spluttering for a second or two before dying) and it turned out to be the fuel pump relay.

Thanks again to all who replied. The car was trailered to the local OPC and they have diagnosed a Bank 1 cam adjuster has failed and requires a new solenoid. They tell me that there is a chance that the mechanical part associated with this may have gone; in which case serious bucks. Hopefully I'll be lucky.
Will advise the outcome in due course!

There is a bit of me that thinks that you would have been better off with an Independent! Just a thought.....

But OPCs do know their stuff smile

I thought about an Independent about 15 miles away; however, our local OPC is well thought of amongst R11 Porsche Club members, so she's gone there. I popped in and had a chat about the car generally and I felt they weren't trying to stitch me up. They are doing a service as well, so hopefully all will be well! If not, I will certainly let you know.

Am having some other work done, including a service; don't think the solenoid replacement is too heavy. Hopefully she will be ready for Tuesday. Will advise the outcome

VarioCam solenoid in the 996 engine is not a big job. The actuator is a bigger job.
