Steering wheel making a loud squeaky noise when turning right at slow speed - anyone else had this in a 997 and any ideas what it could be?

It's not a mouse

Had this on my 996. It was the rubber boot that the steering column passes through behind the pedals. I sprayed it with wd40 and the squeak was no more.

Hope thus helps?

Thanks, I thought it could be this too but the squeak is definitely coming from where the steering wheel meets the cowling - I'm certain it's a rubbing as I can duplicate it......

I think you may be right, my apologies. I looked into it more today and its definitely more external than internal. Will try the lubricant.

Perhaps it's the bearing on the column? Interior squeaks are really annoying so hopefully you get it sorted asap.

All the best.

Many thanks, tried that too but no joy. Not too worried, just annoying as you say.

Will report back once it has been looked into in more detail

My 997 did this - dealer ended up replacing the airbag unit which helped..... (Warranty)

Thanks, Dreamer. I thought it was where the steering wheel met the cowling,McCullagh have Ben airbag spring related etc but listening to it, it definitely sounds like its lower down the column - always difficult to identify the source of sound

No probs! It sounded like a rubbing noise where the wheel met the cowling, like you say. They replaced a bit which didn't fix it, then replaced the whole unit, which did. But now it squeaks sometimes at low speed when turning (car park speed) and tbh I can't be bothered to fix it - it only does it very rarely now - hope you get it fixed! I hate chasing rattles/squeaks!

Any updates on this? I have something similar on my 06 C4S; there is a light squeak coming from the steering column internally when turning at low speeds (parking speeds and < 20mph) in either direction.

Yes, it is with Porsche at the moment. At firs they suspected the tie rod ends or ball joints, but have now identified it as the steering rack. They are replacing the rack under warranty

Thanks for the response. I guess thats an acceptable solution for warrantied cars but, as mine is out, I'll check with my trusty independent to see what he says.
