“These are early days for the programme, and success rates have been slightly on the low side. Out of a total of 1215 births since the programme began, we have successfully delivered 76 healthy babies. The rest were either stillborn or died within hours. We do understand that this sounds bad to the layperson, but it’s a matter of perspective. What I mean is we failed to deliver a single healthy child in the first 900 instances, but since then we’ve improved our practices and are happy to have delivered 76 out of 315 with a healthy outcome, so our success rate is now up to 30% on our latest sample.”

Hospital baby deaths probe
Government inspectors were today sent in to investigate deaths of mothers and babies at an NHS hospital.
The unprecedented action follows mounting concern over the series of deaths at the maternity unit in St Peter's hospital in Chertsey, Surrey.
Inspectors from the health watchdog, the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI), would not be drawn on details but confirmed they were looking into deaths going back a number of years.
