Is Porsche for me? (996 content)
Discussion
Hi all!
I'm from Finland, and cars are very expensive in here. If i tell you lads how expensive they are, you would s
t your pants. Anyhow, i want real sports car and i want enjoy my life lil bit more. I want car which is enjoyable from 1/10th to the 10/10ths. Rear wheel drive, great steering wheel, good manual transmission, beautiful 2+2coupe, decent p/w ratio (lightness is good), reliable&robust and reasonable running costs. I think that 996 carrera could tick all those boxes? Another great choise could be 968? What you guys think about it?
I did test drive GT86 and it was perfect. I just loved everything in that car. However, it is too expensive, almost 50k€ (Golf GTI is almost same). So clean you trousers... I started to search alternatives and i find that maybe only Porsches tick those boxes?
So, have you enjoyed your Porsches and what kind of running costs have you seen in a long run? I'm thinking that i would keep this car for loong time. I'm aware off RMS/IMS problems.
And sorry about my bad english.

No need to apologise for your English, it's better than my Finnish! In fact, it's better than most English on here!
It sounds from your comments that you would enjoy a Porsche. Which model? Have you driven any?
How much are 968 club sports in Finland? They are great drivers cars, and built like brick s
t houses!

t houses!Clubs Sports are like 15k€ to 23k€, so they are little bit cheaper than cheapest 996 carreras. But i need 4 seats, so regular 968 and 911 (996) is my only options, i think? I haven't driven any Porsche yet, but i hope that i can test drive few of them before i make desicions. It would be my dd.
In my hometown was one MY00 boxster on sale, so i did chechk it out. I loved it, didn't get to test drive cos i was hurry. But everything felt great. Seating position is very tight and steering wheel was in right place so everything was better than good. Overall, inetrior was't bad. Not at all. Exterior was great too, it sits so nicely and it does have beautiful lines. It does have quite generous luggage space in front, which is good. I think 996 has same size space in front than boxster do?
It's a shame that it is only a 2 seater. Very nice car indeed.

If you have an itch that needs scratching, scratch it - don't tickle it with a feather!
Sorry for the possibly confusing post as your English is so much better than any of my three alternates - one is not 'Chav'.
If one has a Porsche itch, it generally means a 911
Hope that helps.... no point in having the best ever 968 or whatever and always wishing you had a 911
Good luck - DO IT! And enjoy.

(Although that beer costs more than unleaded in Finland)

Yes, i think 911 could be one helluva car. And it is 2+2 seater too, so it could be perfect car for me. Reasonable running cost with good performance and classic look. Not bad on paper, not bad at all.
This porsche-fever is horrible disease !!

Be warned though - you will now discover 'budget creep' and 'Turbo envy'

Imagine if you could find a 'supercar' that has every day usability, 2+2, a (sort of) boot and 'reasonable' duel consumption - without shouting from the rooftops..... Oh wait!

May i suggest an older porsche then, i.e. pre-996 which will be huge fun at very low speed with its sound and its chatter and general old-skool character and lower limits. The 968 is a good car, beautifully balanced. I used to own a very nice 968CS with some useful MO30 modifications. But when I got my 993 it took me about half a mile of road to realise that it was such a deeper experience with far more layers and ultimately it was going to be a much richer, rewarding experience. The engine, control weights, handling, driving style .... another level IMO.
My vote would be for a good 993 or 964 but you should test drive a whole bunch of cars and see what you like because no one can tell you that.
Hi LasseV and welcome.
Can you buy a UK car and import it into Finland from here???
I ask because I used to work with a number of Finnish guys a few years ago and they used to buy cars here in the UK, things like 996's, Esprits, CLK's, BMW's etc.
Then drive the car back to Finland and have the car as there private daily transport back in Finland. Somehow avoiding your crippling taxes.
I've lost contact with the guys unfortunatley. But could be something worth looking into.
PS: Of course, it could all have been some horrendous tax fiddle

Thanks for advice. 968 is second best choice, i think. But i need daily driver and winters are very very very harsh in finland, so 964/993 are on the edge.. They are getting quite old and running costs are quite high. I think those cars deserves to be driven only when weather is nice and sun is shining The 968 is a good car, beautifully balanced. Not when there is a snow on the ground and temperature is under -30 c and your arse is freezing and so on.. But they are very desirable cars, so who knows. Anyway, i need to see them in flesh/test drive them before i make any decisions. Being a daily driver is must, so that's the reason why i only thing Porsche or a sports car from Toyota. Driver focused and purpose built cars but in the sametime they are the best quality/reliability what you can get from motoring world. And quality and reliability means lower running costs.

Homer J:
Yes, if you live outside of Finland 12 months or more, you can bring tax-free car with you. But i don't have that option so no tax-free car for me. However it is possible for me that i will pick up some used car from England. You have a good selection of different sports cars and prices are lower than in germany. Only downside is that you drive from wrong side

Slaav: I hope that i don't get bitten by turbo-fever-mosquito. It would be an end of all hope...

And yeah, i like to have some

LasseV, it is another itch that you don't yet realise you have.... I am still resisting but only just!

Made the mistake of driving one a while ago - it is a bit like walking through long grass hoping not to be bitten - the field is full of grass snakes and you still have not been bitten.
It is only a matter of time though

(as I suspect it is with me!)
