I'm heading out to Majorca this weekend for a week of riding with some mates (no racing). I don't insure my bikes at home but should probably do so for this trip since my total kit will be worth north of £3.5k. Any recommendations please? Is it worth splitting the policies, i.e. bike + travel or are there any companies that will cover both for a reasonable amount?

I know there was a thread on this recently but the OP in that one had his bikes insured under his home policy which I don't.

Switch your home insurance to M&S Premier cover otherwise you're dog & ducked should it all go Pete Tong. Your choice.

Always read the smallprint. The value of your investment may go down as well as up. Your home may reposessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage or any other loan secured on it.

Well if you're rich enough not to have home insurance then you're rich enough to replace a £3.5k bike when the baggage handlers fold it in half. wink

I took out ski insurance this year with Debenhams, unfortunately my daughter had to recovered from the mountain and wasn't able to continue with her ski lessons, they paid out promptly for both her recovery costs, medical expenses and loss of ski lessons and ski hire.

If you don't have home insurance you'll have to take out a dedicated policy and they are expensive. My friend has one for his 4k Canyon and I think it costs him £370 per year with quite a high excess.

Best advice I can give you is join British Cycling if you are not already a member and get one of their approved schemes as you get a bit of a discount, perhaps 10 or 12%

There is a discount code here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/common/voucher/print.asp...

Thanks, will check that out. Any idea how much a £2.5k bike will be to insure through them once I'm a member please? Getting quotes through protect my bubble for £17/month or M&S premium contents insurance for £30/month.

No mate, I don't work in insurance. Where you live will affect your premium as well as where you store it and whether you need worldwide cover

British Cycling use these people, you can get a quote on their website

Whilst sorting out insurance recently quotes were coming back at around 10% of the declared value of the bike.

Is that bike insurance with overseas cover, or holiday insurance with a single declared expensive item?

The latter doesn't appear to be available and is what I wanted. The options seem to be that you have to have a year-long policy for the bike, which includes covering it in Europe, and a separate holiday policy.

Watch out with M&S - they recently changed their policy on expensive bike and you have to pay a (large) premium on them. You also HAVE to take out the cover or your policy is invalid since its a 'whole house' policy - they have to cover all contents.
