Ah, light tint. Just light enough so you can see someone in the car in the day and just dark enough so you can bugger all at night.

Test drove three cars last night in Sao Paulo. A 2002 silver BMW 320i, black Audi 225 TT chipped to 270BHP and a 95 black SL500 with light tint which looks fantastic as there you never see the new ones about. Most fun was the BMW! Actually, the TT was the best but the guy who´s dealership I was at is a race driver and he did a flying lap with the BMW when he saw I was not an immediate fan. Well, after applying new underwear, I must say I am very impressed with the humble 320i.

So with the options of a 95 SL500 in spanking condition with 27k on the clock for GBP13,800 or a new 270BHP TT for GBP33k what say you the jury? Bear in mind it will be driven a total of 2.5-3 months out of 12.

I'd go for none of the above. The TT will dent too easily due to its rounded body(have you seen how Brazilians park their cars?). The SL is too insecure from car jackers and all of them have poor crash protection. A friend that lives in Rio has had two serious crashes, neither his fault and was hospitalised on both occasions. First time a women ran a red light and t-boned him, second time a SUV shunted him into a parked car.

Your best choice would be a Chevy Blazer Blindado. This would give you better crash protection, more security(bullet proof) and you could go off road (ie traffic islands etc) if required to avoid trouble.

Have you checked in a bookstore, their are two mags like top marques, forget their names.

Como voce ficar em SP? Voce conhece outre cidades ai?

Por que eu amo Brasil e eu sou metade Brasileiro

I won´t even entertain the idea of a bullet-proof car let alone an American one!

There´s a yellow EVO VII about but it going for GBP32K! I have a garage and when I am out I don´t park on the street as people tend to reverse and drive into your car to make space to get out.

Just sickens me having to cough up 30K for a TT! Probably going for the SL or a chipped S3 sem blindado viu

Yeah, its funny how they shunt the car infront/ behind to fit into a parking space. People leave their handbrakes off so the carparking guys can push them along to make more space.

An Audi S3 may be a good idea as they are made in Brasil and therefore free of import duty. The TT's in Brasil are actually made in Hungary, not sure if the UK TT's are built there also. Why do you want a chipped car, the roads are terrible to drive fast on due to the high camber and most other cars on the roads are 1.2 Gols etc(not much to race against).

On another point, have you a recommendation of a Brasilian bank? I've just got my CPF and need an account for transfering money. HSBC are over there, but when I enquired over here, they seemed clueless about transfering money there. They said I had to change sterling to USD --->Reals.

Mate, don´t even waste your time with HSBC Brasil! They have no idea (seriously) about banking! All the banks have been striking in the last few days making western union transfers a bitch, especially as you can only do it with Banco do Brasil between 10am & 2pm and you can´t send money unless you have an account with them! Muppets.

Anyway, I don´t have a CPF so I use CityBank. Might be a good option for you as you can transfer funds to the U.S easily (maybe even use the same account) not sure though but the other banks really are jokes. I wonder if HSBC in HK have even the slightest clue that HSBC Brasil were ruining their reputation?

Back ot the cars, the A3s are made in Brasil but the S3s are imports. Regarding the chipping, a little more BHP is just what the Dr ordered I drive out to the beaches, countryside and to Rio a bit so I get there quicker. Christ, driving around Jardims Paulista is enough to take out you teeth never mind your fillings.

Entendo agora, quando voce chego com sua carro novidade, voce quero a fila de meninas esperando pra voce?

So you haven't bought property there yet? You'll need a CPF for any major purchase in Brasil, such as a car, boat or house.

You can apply over here, or in Brasil. I did mine in the Correio, after about a week, you need to go to the Recieta Federal and show your passport, once thats done you get your number and they'll mail you the card.

If you're driving over to Rio, you'll have to drive down Avendia Brasil, which is pretty bad for gunfights and mass robbery. Usually the trafficantes hijack a bus and set it on fire to block the road. They then walk back up the blocked road robbing everybody in the trafic jam.

I am trying to close a deal on some pre-construction property now. Not much of a problem buying big things here if you know the right chaps. Have a friend in the government here who takes care of most things and is Pistonhead too, which is ideal. When you have that handy government badge/seal to flash red lights are green lights - literally.

Well, got to run up to Stand Center on Av. Paulista to pick up a copy of Need for Speed Underground 2 which my copyright infringing associates have just informed me is available.

There's no hassle in getting a CPF, you'll need one if you make a major purchase there or to open a bank account.

With property, you need to register the title deeds(Titulo) in your name at the 'Escritorio de Imoveis' for that area. When you buy your property, you will have to go there with the vendor to sign the deeds over to you, a CPF number is required. The CPF is basically an equivalent of a NI number, they have property tax's in Brasil, thats part of the reason for needing the CPF to register the title deeds in your name. If you don't do the above, then you don't have any legal title to the property, and later any Joey can come along and say your house is his, you'll have to prove otherwise in court.

You'll also need a bank account to pay utility bills, condominium fee etc.

As for high ranking friends, people can lose power or lose favour. Just look at Eduardo Braga in Manaus!

One last note, more than a few gringos have been ripped off in Rio, usually Americans who think they know it all.

You also need a lawyer who speaks Portuguese/ English who is totally independant of anybody else in the deal. Many contracts have nasty clauses inserted.

Cheers for the info. I always and unfortunately have a lawyer nearby and property over here goes under to family over here - so far so good touch wood! As far as I am aware you can open your account with CityBank with just your passport.
