Thought I would start a new topic as I am keen to gain some feedback on the shots I took...

These are some shots taken at the weekend - all hand held as it was not intended to be a 'photography trip out'. C&C welcome and encouraged (but please be gentle, I am still learning!)

Very good start but almost every one is underexposed, which spoils the enjoyment. Read up on histograms and exposure (and keeping horizons level).

BW versions are very flat; try to avoid fake vignetting.

Can't see the images on my phone but what metering mode are you using? I find center weighted average the most consistent. Evaluative seems quite variable in results, also make use of exposure compensation

Interesting, I normally shoot on evaluative but I find I have to pull the exposure in ACR quite a bit often times, I'll try centre weighted average I think, see if it makes a better job.

Incidentally, is it just me who finds ACR's auto white balance hilariously poor?

EDIT: There's visible chromatic aberration in pics 8 and 9, especially where the trees meet the sky; a bit of tweaking in the lens correction tool in photoshop (or similar) would reduce that.

Thanks for the feedback - points noted. I deliberately underexposed some in the post processing stage as I wanted to somehow create a 'moody' scene, but yes I can see what you mean now with some of the images.

Thanks. I believe it is on evaluative mode atm. Will make sure I have a play around with the metering when out and about!

You may want to pull down your monitor's brightness, and even spend the money on an i1 or Datacolor Spyder 4 calibrator.
Once you've done that, you won't reduce the exposure as much.
Did you try some HDR in a few of those?

Some nice ideas with the composition in those, so good start! As said above, all are underexposed and all the images with a clear horizon are all a little wonky.

I agree with what has been said already. My favourite one is the boat submerged in the sand. I would perhaps try to reduce the vignette a bit with that one, and up the brightness and contrast a little too.

The shot of the coloured beach huts could do with a bit of white balance correction too, as there is a slightly pink tint to the clouds and white areas.

Again, as has been said already, there is nice composition in several of the shots.

Were you shooting JPG? Using Adobe RGB?

Presenting in Adobe RGB?

I ask because, apart from the aforementioned exposure observations many of them look a little 'muddy' for want of a better description. n the past I have seen this as s result of processing in Adobe RGB and not converting to sRGB prior to viewing on a monitor via the internet.

I could be wrong but they look sort of "off" in the same way the a slightly off colour space can look.

Not HDR exactly. I used a relatively heavy amount of the 'Clarity' feature in Lightroom 4 which adds an HDR effect of sorts!

Thanks! Worked out how to adjust the images in Lightroom to sort out the horizon issues - won't happen again! thumbup

Mmmmmm....It says that I am exporting as an sRGB. Not sure tbh, but will be something I will keep an eye on in the future!

Stu, my 60D arrives this week and I'm rather annoyed having read this thread... You've given me one hell of a target to set myself. wink

Great pics.
