I started my car last night and after the intial surge of revs that occours every time I start the engine the revs dropped right down to the point where the needle was at 0rpm and the engine sounded like it was on the edge of stalling but not actually doing so.

I turned the engine off and waited and few minutes hoping that it would sort itself out, but when I started the engine the same occoured.

I was a bit worried at this point but needed to be somewhere so thought that I would drive to the end of the street to see if the problem would rectify itself. As I drove to the end of my road each time I pressed the clutch down the revs again dropped onto the needle without the engine stalling.

I was beginning to think about a large bill to sort the problem out as I was waiting to pull out of my junction when the revs suddenly rose up to about 2k then fell back to the normal running level of about 800rpm.

The revs were fine for the rest of the night and also today but was wondering if more knowledgeable people on this site think I have a more serious problem or just a minor blip.

Cheers, Nigel

PS I drive a 97 Alfa Romeo GTV

Sounds like your ECU need some attention. I have had similar problems with various cars over the years. Go to your dealer and get it hooked up to the CPU and they should sort it fairly easily.

Check your oil level! The recent Alfas seem to really get through it - friend's went from full to none in 5K miles and cost him a new engine.

He tells me there's no oil pressure light either!
