Just wondered if anyone knows where to get an 'otter switch' from and how much.

For some reason, the fan does not turn on, but when i connect the 2 wires of the otter switch it does.
Does this mean it is the otter switch or could it be the thermostat???
Once this problem is sorted the beast will be back on the road for summer!!

Mine was an Intermotor 50110 from a local motor factor for £8 in 2009.
Are you sure it is getting hot enough to operate? you could test it in a pan of hot water. I think they operate at above 88 degrees C.

that (as you can see) is a screw in type, original fitment on my S3 was a flat faced thing with a clamp arangement to hold it into the pipe?

Did not know there were 2 different types!!
Oh well if its wrong i will have to find the other type.
It seemed like the wire connectors are the same, but it also looks like it is clamped......

The car is in the garage now so i will find out tomorrow.

Search Metro fan switch on Ebay and the clamp type comes up. Its' cheaper to !!!

If it is the threaded type as fitted to the golf cart........oops sorry chimaera then the details are at this thread basically from a fiesta or escort with correct thread size and pitch, plenty on the bay some at £6.18 delivered from gsf autofactors - a nationwide chain

Threaded type is M22 x 1.5

Mine's definitely the threaded type and already fitted (1991 S3).

They're common to many cars - Renault 5 kept cropping up when I was searching the web for one. Local motor factors couldn't buy them as cheap as amazon were selling them for.

The operating temp range is 88 - 92 degrees I understand and is stamped on the face of it.

Not sure my old one was dead though as I've since traced a failed connector to the fan which was my fan wasn't kicking in, but i changed it anyway as I've overhauled the entire cooling system - new water pump & re-cored rad so £11 on an otter switch wasn't an issue.
