If that's a 100% crop of the long end of a cheapie zoom I don't think you've been robbed.

Don't forget at distances like that the atmosphere isn't perfectly clean, and it isn't so bad.

In normal conditions I bet it'll do a reasonable job.

For a mile away I'd say that's good. A little sharpening would help.

TBH the quality for a crop in that first image looks fine, a touch of sharpening will bring out plenty of detail.
