Anyone had a single mass flywheel plus performance clutch fitted on their 986? Is this safe or is it too much for the gearbox?

My concern is not so much for the gearbox as it is for the engine, specifically the crankshaft.

The dual mass flywheel acts as a vibration dampener. Its job is to reduce the crankshaft's torsional vibrations to acceptable levels.

The single mass (aka lightweight flywheel) doesn't/can't do that.

True but Google 'Rattler' and take a look at that - should be able to sort the harmonic/ damping issues.

I looked at one for my 996 track car and plenty of people seemed to be using lightened/ single mass flywheels with no problems, especially in the US.

Give Steve Smith at vibration free (he does balancing for some of the F1 teams) and he will help you out.

He also deals with Rattlers: http://vibrationfree.co.uk/our-services/motorsport...

FWIW, up until this season, all the BRSCC Boxsters have run with the standard flywheel. As of 2013, we are permitting a custom, lightweight flywheel made by TF Motorsport. It comes with a different clutch plate and cost just over £1k.

There is a photo of it on 911 Sport's page on Facebook:
