Hello,

I'm an idiot who has inadvertently washed and then tumble dried my 997.2 key. I've found the main body of the key, chip etc but not the buttons.

Haven't had time to check whether it works yet, but assume not - how much damage am I looking at at the main dealer? Just a re-coding or new chip?

Granted your key is much newer than mine and probably contains loads more delicate electronics than my 986's key, but mine survived a 30 minute swim, ten minutes in a hot tub and another ten in a sauna before I noticed it was in my pocket! getmecoat

The activation light was flashing madly after I fished it out, so I gently levered open the plastic casing with a paper clip and held it upside down to drain the worst of it, then I used a hair dryer on VERY low warmth and fan speed for about 10 minutes on and off. Felt like a right tool in the changing rooms gently drying off the key to my flashy git motor! loser

Allowed it to air dry for another few minutes with the paper clip holding the case open, snapped it shut and hey presto it worked perfectly. Once I got home I left it with the casing levered open overnight for a couple of days and I've not had any problem with it since. My OPC was surprised when I recounted the tale but maybe I was lucky cos it worked for me.

Another option would be to get one of those "dry out" kits that are for rescuing mobiles dropped down toilets. IIRC the Gadget Show tested a few of them a couple of series back and they worked fairly well. At least worth exploring before going to your OPC.

Course a client of mine did exactly the same as you and he had to get a complete new key at some exorbitant fee. Sorry!

Thanks for this; was going to cost £220 to replace the key head etc, so I'm pleased to report that a new battery and some drying time was all that was required - phew!
