Hi all,

I would like to add my wife to the deeds of my property. I phoned up a solicitor this morning and got what i thought was an expensive quote. What is the going rate roughly?

The solicitor mentioned that there would be charges for changing the information with the Land registry and obviously their costs on top.

I'd like some clarification on the process involved and an idea of what is an appropriate price.

Thanks in advance for help

Circa 400 is what the law firm we refer our business to charge. It's usually more cost effective to get it done whilst you are remortgaging at the same time.....

Thanks.

I can't do the whole remortgage thing as there isn't one, so this is merely an add on.

The price you mention is approx what i was quoted. I was surprised (naively perhaps) that it was such an expensive process to just add a name!

Without knowing the exact breakdown of the costings, I would assume there is a fee levied by the land registry and then the man hours and paperwork incurred by the solicitors. It doesn't take a lot to get to 400 when you take in a few hours charges from a law firm + VAT.

I'd ring the land registry for advice. They should tell you which forms need completing, and they can be downloaded on the net.
When my old man died my brother and I transferred the deeds to ourselves (once probate was granted) directly, without using a solicitor. The fee is dependant on the value of the property, but a lot less than using a solicitor.
