To the numpty in the blue clio who thought it was acceptable to brake test me as we overtook a truck on the M90 near Kelty this afternoon, who then went on to demonstrate how he could make his little exhaust pop and topped it all by pulling into the nearside lane to let me pass then accelerated as I moved to pass.
You really did show yourself to be a complete arse, for what? Just because you didn't want me to overtake you in a Skoda Yeti? Grow up!

Sorry for the rant guys;)

Sounds like the idiot on the M74 this morning who, three times, moved from inside lane to outside lane without signalling to overall gain 2 car spaces on me as we were actually both coming off on the Junction 1 slip road.

I know this is of absolutely no help whatsoever but were you perhaps going a little too close to him? Just thinking that it's only a brake test if you're right up their arse or you're a good distance away and they brake really, really hard.

I can't think of any sensible reason whatsover why you'd brake as the lead car in an overtake. You either want to overtake the lorry or you don't.

I've seen this before, where a driver "thinks" someone is too close so jumps on the breaks to scare the car behind. Doing it while on a duel carragway with a lorry on the inside is rather an idiotic thing to do. Does 2 wrongs make a right? If someone is so close to my rear, I move over and let them past at the earliest convenience. Being a complete arse about anything you "think" another driver has done is not your place, that's what the police are for. smile

Yes I have to agree with this ^^ we all enjoy driving , but there are idiots out there who think they'er the better drivers than anyone on the road..just let them pass.

To slow down for an obstacle?

To slow down for a speed camera that has been hidden by the lorry?

To slow down because you've spotted a queue ahead?

Any of those causing an application of brakes on a motorway indicates a complete inability to read the road ahead IMHO. What sort of obstacle is going to appear on a motorway other than a genuine emergency which develops?

Please don't take my comment out of context. The context is simply overtaking a lorry and choosing to stab the brakes halfway past.

Not quite applicable in the OP's case but, I did hit a traffic cone on the M74 last week. It caused a fair bit of damage to the GF's car.
Strange set of circumstances that led to it happening, basically I was changing lanes one at a time from 3 to 1. About 2-3s ahead a van was doing same.
I had to get a little closer than I would have liked when going to 1 as there was other cars starting to queue.
As I was moving to 1 on a gentle right bend the van in front swerved across, I spotted the cone but had to decide on best option very quickly.
Due to not being 100% certain what everyone else around me was doing I decided to keep steady and take the hit.
Annoying but, I think on reflection still the correct choice.
Braking unless absolutely necessary in these sort of circumstances does have a high risk.

Apologies, I thought I was quoting you perfectly in context when
you said:

...so provided a few sensible reasons smile

In any case, there are plenty of places on motorways where obstacles could be just around the corner/over the hill. The M90 provides a prime example just north of the Forth Bridge. One can often cross the brow of this hill to find a queue on the other side:

Was it a blue Clio 200?

My old one was picked up yesterday and I think he might have been heading that way!

2 wrongs don't make a right but a pro driver would expect this sort of thing to happen if they drive too close. They'd leave room in any case. It's just a question of knowing what to expect and then not doing things that are likely to cause people to take offence

Excuse me young man, but you know nothing about me. As it happens you are making several presumptions, firstly that I was driving too close, I wasn't, I was travelling at a faster speed than the Clio but as I closed on him I adjusted my speed accordingly. When I did this the numpty lifted off the throttle causing me to slow again, instead of accelerating through the overtake he then chose to wag his finger at me, remember that all of this was whilst he is supposed to be overtaking a truck. His amateurish brake test was no threat to me in real terms since I wasn't close enough and it wasn't severe enough to be a real threat to me and my wife, but it was so unnecessary and as for the dropping of his clutch in order to rev his engine and make his exhaust pop, that was just childish. The net result was that a safe overtake of a truck which should have been completed in a few seconds took over a minute. As for being a pro driver, I have in the past over 20 years driving in Motorsport from karts through circuit racing, rallying, Hillclimbs, sprints etc. In short I believe I do know the difference when someone is driving properly or being a complete arse.

I wasn't making any assumptions about you. I only asked if you might have been going too close in my first post. I was responding to the person who said that 2 wrongs don't make a right in further posts. I'd honestly moved past the initial issue and was just speaking in general terms. Glad that I'm still young in some people's eyes though!
