Now out of Warranty and need a new battery.

Any best buys or recommendations?

Bosch don't seem to be what they were?

Varta have been mentioned +vely.

And assume an easy DIY job? Looks like simple clamps, leads and a breather tube (if applicable)

Thanks as always

I have a Bosch S5 and it seems fine, however a lot go for the Halfords calcium.

I also bought the Bosch. Think mine was with the 4 year warranty. £80 ish. Works great.

BTW, Don't know where you heard Bosch are not what they were. Been working fine for me.

Also, FYI - Varta is Bosch too!

Sorry for another dumb question.....

Eurocarparts say a recommended battery - Halfords also do it and there is one near by! Roughly £15-20 difference but I get it now and swap them tomorrow.

Are they the same though? Would Halfords carry a cheaper alternative, badged up for them? i.e. Cannot find the same format model or part numbers but both seem S5 with 5yr guarantee.

Thanks

Also got the Bosch, think it's called an HSB096 at Halfords. Paid £71 for it.

Fitting is as easy as peas, no breather tube (although you might want to hang on to the breather adapter just in case) and just a little clamp dooberry that screws into the bottom of the battery bay. If you're replacing the big Porsche battery then you'll need to unscrew the clip all the way and move it in to the second slot as the Bosch is smaller. It'll make sense when you see it, not a massive job at all.

ETA - I was writing my reply when you posted but coincidentally I think I answered your question. It's the HSB096 at Halfords. There are Halfords-spec batteries that would work but Porsches draw a lot of starting current (770 Amps from memory) and I'd rather put a branded battery in the car as opposed to an el cheapo one made for Halfords.

Thanks for reply. Think the suggestion was HSB010 on the locator but would rather go for higher spec one.

And having done it yourself, is it a pick up and replace jobby? As in no issues re ECU/Alarm etc? HAve to input the raido code in Disco when disconnect battery and dont want to blow an ECU by doing somethign stupid.

Will obviously check the manual as well smile

To avoid setting off the alarm, place the key in the ignition and turn it 1 click BEFORE you disconnect the battery.

Also dont open or close the doors while you change the battery as the self closing window may clout/damage the window trim.

Yep, unclip the old battery, undo the clamp, lift out the old battery (it's heavy and the angle can make it a little awkward). Clip in your new one and reconnect the leads. Not had an issue with the ECU/alarm or the radio, although be prepared for a wide variety of failures and warning lights when you start the car up. You need to reset the one-touch windows by putting them all the way down manually and then putting them back up again. If you have PASM (not sure if the 996s came with it?) you also need to drive a short distance in a straight line to allow the suspension to recalibrate itself.

Don't think there's much more to it than that.
