Autocar have recently reported some details on the new 991 Turbo ....

".. the new 911 Turbo will match the output of the most recent 911 Turbo S, with 530bhp and up to 530lb ft torque. Those reserves with be channelled through a standard six-speed manual or optional seven speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox ..."

It will have the new 991 GT3 style 4WS and probably the same tweaks to the electro-mechanical steering. The weight should be reduced below the current 997.2 but the killer for me is the price - £120k + options yikes

Article here - hopefully you can get to it

I can't see it myself, if it's not available on the GT3 then why would it be on the Turbo which is more the car suited to PDK??

AutoCar nonsense me thinks!

If the GT3 is PDK only then so will it be with the turbo as I'm sure with the 997 that the majority sold were PDK?

Also, why would it be a 6 speed manual? The current 991 manual has 7, the 6 is only fitted to the Cayman and Boxster...

I doubt there will be a manual version....according to popular belief, even the old 997.1 Turbo was too quick to change gear manually so there would be no chance in the 991 laugh

Topspeed & NeoCarRelease are also quoting a manual version ...

"2013 Porsche 911 Turbo Feature: For the new generation 911 Turbo, Porsche is cranking things up with a sportier appearance, coupe-like proportions, and reduced overhangs. The large air intakes situated on the flanks of the 911 Turbo will rush cool air into the 3.8-liter flat-six engine pumping out about 550 HP. This engine will be combined with Porsche’s newest technologies, including brake regeneration and stop start systems which will help reduce fuel consumption by about 12%. The engine will be offered with an improved manual gearbox as standard, or an optional Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox. The PDK will have with no less than seven forward gears, combining the driving comfort of a converter automatic transmission with the dynamic gearshift of a sequential racing gearbox."

.. though for me its still speculation and no real source.

The Turbo is much closer to the standard range than the GT cars. The standard cars have a manual option, so I can't see any reason why the Turbo would have to follow the path of the GT3.

There is an interesting article on the Car Magazine website with the head of GT development and a point he made was that they are a small team and offering more options is difficult from a development standpoint due to the extra effort.

In Februarys CAR mag, Ben Pulman interviews Dr Wolfgang Hatz, Head of Porsche R&D on the upcoming 991 Turbo.

"the next 911 Turbo will not have a manual transmission."

Porsche recently sent a memo round all UK OPCs asking them to try harder selling manual gearboxes as they ARE NOT selling. So I seriously doubt a manual turbo.

The answer to some extent is power, but really it is the torque.

To make a gearbox that can transfer 400bhp, 300lbs ft is a totally different game to 530bhp plus and 500 lbs ft. I know from personal experience of blowing gear boxes up!

A gear box for a turbo will need to be substantially different to a gear box for an N/A; or the N/A gear box is massively overspecified.

An OPC will push to sell PDK gearboxes as they'll make a bigger profit from the sale!

991 Turbo will be PDK only. Suspect the story you refer to in AC may have been written to justify the "McLaren to build 911 beater" cover line.

I know, that's why Porsches memo was a bit comical! I think they must have a pile of pre-built manual 991s they can't shift!

Hatz off to him for being so concise.
