There's been a lot of interest lately in old 911's with modern running gear. I'd love a Singer but too expensive.

So, I thought I'd build myself one (or project manage its at least)!

So, what would the perfect 911 consist of?

I'll use it for track days, bit of racing but must be road legal so I can do The Ring.....if its still open!

My thinking is:

1984 Carrera body with wider arches

GT3RS 996 engine and gearbox

Ceramics, 997 centre lock wheels

997 GT3RS Mk 2 suspension no electronics

Stripped interior, 2 race seats

Target weight 1000kg, 400 Hp

What think you? Is it doable? Has anyone done this? Am I mad?

Jx

Hi,

Forgive the unusual approach but I've read your post on the Griffith. Please email me if you are still considering the sale of the car. Cheers.

You'd be much better building a proper hardcore 964, which isn't difficult to get to 350bhp+ with Motec and some cams. A chap I know has a 964 RS with 355bhp, and Unit 11 got more than this out of a 964-based engine in the green Singer-a-like they built for a client.

I've no idea if anyone's ever installed a water cooled engine in a torsion bar car, but I think it would be incredibly involved and still difficult to get sufficient cooling (not enough aperture space in the front bumper, and probably no room for the radiators anyway). As for centre-locks, no-one that has them on a 997 seems to want them, but I'm sure it's possible to get genuine racing ones (from a 993?) if you really want them.

But hey, it's your money and the "perfect" 911 is different in everyone's eyes/mind so decide what you want and see if someone will build it for you. I think you'll be into six figures to do it properly though...

I love old 911s - including backdates - but for your purposes you would hard to pushed to beat a cooking 996 GT3.
Alternatively, how about this ready made one by one of the best names in the old 911 world (Alan Drayson).

Sounds like fun.

I would ditch the ceramics if it's going to be part track car/part racer, and also the centre-lock hubs. For weight reduction perhaps use Alcons instead of steels, but definitely steer clear of Centre-locks unless they're from cup car...form over function IMO, actually most would agree. Certainly look nice, but that's about it, and new maintenance schedule for them is a disappointment to say the least.

Good luck!

GT3 engine has been done in an early shell, I have a mag article somewhere. Looked immense!

I have built a few projects and I would recommend not going water cooled in an old shell, so much work required from cooling to electrics. Not to mention having problems getting a car that modified into a race series, Im sure you would have such a narrow choice.

Get 3.2 shell and put a 964 or 993 engine and get it to 1000kg. It will be a lot of fun.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

Done four years ago. Built and smokes a lot of modern Pork now it's been developed :

PCCB's, Ohlins, 2006 997 GT3 Cup engine, trick (properly stress analysed) cage and internal (hidden) shell strengthening.

Build thread here : (and no cooling issues) smile

Awesome, yes thats the one.

Do you think that was where Singer got the inspiration from?
