Hi,
I am looking to get a 968. I ve had a couple of 944's in my time and would like to get back into a trans-axle Porsche so I came across this one, advertised here too:

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

For the last couple of weeks I have done quite a bit of research on the 968's and also the CS.
However this car makes me suspicious as it looks like its a "Sport" model with the wheels painted red and the CS sticker down the side.
The chassis numbers of a Sport comes up as a Clubsport when checked at the dealer ship so how can I be sure that this is a genuine Clubsport with Comfort Pack and rear seats added at factory?
Also from what I read the Black Clubsports only came with silver wheels and not colour coded ones and I ve never seen a Club Sport in this colour scheme.

Can anyone shed some light on this, please.

Cheers
Seb

Hmmmm, I have heard of a CS with rear seats before, I'm sure Adrian Crawford had one for sale a while back, but I'm pretty sure it was a euro spec car. Never heard of a CS UK model having them.

Wheels have just been repainted. I'd like to know where the damage to the car was, if memory serves the build sticker is in the correct location, so I'd guess the damage was not at the back.

Personally, if it has had as much stuff added to the car, I'd go for a non CATD Sport model which I'm guessing wouldn't be alot more money.

Yeah thats the thing, its only got the lower part of the rear seats. I just spoke to the owner and he said the the damage was to the near side rear quater but its been repaired to a high standard and is not noticable. I am less worried about CAT D, as its going to be a daily and a collectable but I always thought the clubsport came with the carpeted fibre glass cover to go where the rear seats usually are. The owner says that he had it checked by a Porsche specialist and they said that the clubsport with comfort pack came with the rear seat bottoms instead of the carpeted fibre glass cover at the rear.

Is there any other way of telling if it is a Sport or not?

A genuine Clubsport should have a pull cable for the rear hatch - located somewhere around the rear seats (I forget exactly where), whereas the Coupe & Sport had an electric switch just near the driver's right foot. It's not a conclusive check, but it's less likely anyone would fit it just to try and fool people a Sport was a Clubsport.

Yes, forgot about that. There is a pull cord for the rear boot just behind the nearside seat.

The fibreglass shelf can't be used if seats are fitted, however I've never heard of only part the seat being installed.

Back in the day I wanted a CS but with a few "soft" bits on it as I was dong a big annual mileage. Porsche built it as a special order and then decided that it was a good idea and produced the Sport. Mine came badged as a CS and was in the log book as a CS but I had it changed to Sport badging ( yes, I know it looks crazy now). So, it's possible that there are one or two odd spec cars around.
Any idea who the original supplying dealer was and the original reg number?

Just to show how things have changed - It took six months to sell the car back in 1997 because it was white!

Look for manual wind up windows too. You couldn't get these on a sport.

The Sport has four buttons on the centre console: sunroof, electric mirrors, central locking, plus a blank on the right-hand side next to the headlight beam adjuster dial.

This car has only two buttons, so my guess is it's indeed a pukka CS as you couldn't get a Sport without sunroof, locking and electric mirrors.

It appears to be a Club Sport to me too, although its an educated guess based on a few clues. The door cards can be bought as can the winders and the hatch lock can be blanked off.

Ive never seen a faux CS with a cable pull hatch release though and its this that Im basing my opinion on.

If it came from the factory with rear seats, which Im not certain about as my CS was bought when it was a few months old, not new; then the rears are missing. That style of rear squab, which I have always associated with the later Sport, should have a split rear along with seat belts.

My guess is that the valuable seats and rear carpet and shelf were removed from the salvage.

I know it's cheap and is listed as a cat d but i think it has over spray on the lower edge of the build sticker. I'd be having a really good look in the spare wheel well etc for signs of damage if it was me.

ISTR the CS body shells didn't have the mountings in them for the rear belts etc. Is this true? I remember looking at a shell a few years back up at EMC and it definitely didn't have the rear seat belt bolt holes in the rear seat bins.
