I'm looking to get myself a 911, and i'm trying to determine the caveats of each. I see a lot of 'but it's tiptronic'... is that really so bad? I've had a F360 with the F1 transmission before, would it be a similar feel to that (with a bit of shift lag etc)? To be honest, I was a big fan of that gearbox!

Would it be better to spend more on a 997.1 over a higher end later 996? I'm under no illusions over the depreciation, so whilst i'm not saying that that's not a factor, it wouldn't be the primary one; I just want a nice car, and everyone likes to feel like they've had a bargain!

Nothing at all wrong with the tip. I love mine, and prefer to manual. Many people prefer the manual. Just horses for courses. There is nothing wrong with the tip at all. Works very well with the turbo.

Regarding 996 vs 997, I did 'upgrade' and buy a 997, but in the end sold it, as could not see where my extra £25k odd was going. Luckily I kept my 996, and continue to love it. Awesome car (save the headlights).

The tip won't feel like the F1 at all; it's just normal slush box after all.

Drive one and see what you make of it.

The gearbox is the single biggest thing that changes the character of a 996.
You must drive both if you are in the market for a 996.

For me, I could never live with a tip 996, but that is just my opinion.

I've just bought a 996 turbo and went for a manual. As previously mentioned, horses for courses, so try both... As it's not my daily driver, I prefer swapping cogs myself. thumbup

The Tip is a good box and if I had the Porker as a daily driver I would probably go for the Tip. I actually went for a manual as it is a weekend car and I wanted the involvement and fun of changing gears myself

Ive had my Turbo Tip for coming up to 2 years, I drive a manual every day, so for me getting into the pork with the tip box is great, I had my DME re programmed at porsche and the changes are slick as anything, if I want to go manual I just flick the lever and use the buttons.

I wouldn't swap for a manual, mines a weekend toy aswell.

Plus Im going to germany in a couple of weeks, I think the tip will come into its own then!!

The auto really suits the nature of the Turbo. Its a great pairing. Tip is a marketing word for auto.

The way to look at it is, is as full auto with limited slush. If you just want to pootle around its easy. If you want to bury the throttle it will still reward you with endless torque. Things happen a little quickly in a TBO and having somebody change the gears for you kinda works.

I have a manual and I love it. A friend has the auto, I can really see why so many are auto's.

Drive a few and see what you think.

Only had my Tip for a week and a half but loving it so far. Its a daily driver for me so the tip suits. Also, you don't need to worry about over revs with a tip box smile

got back into a 911 a month or so ago and went 996 Tip Tbo as the rest of the car worked for me (was considering both); after years of driving an auto I opted for lazy despite it being a second car.

power delivery is fantastic but i can see the argument for both, possibly moreso than in a normally aspirated; in which i preferred the manual.

plus I'm getting a bit old and farty so the tip fits with the rest of the 'package'!

Things go very quickly in a 996T so first to second to third are quite close together if accelerating hard (in time terms, not physical distance ).

I had a tip car before my manual 996T. I liked it for driving in traffic, but I didn't feel connected enough to it, it didn't feel like a sports car to me and it was a little slushy! I also had a M3 which in part due to the manual box felt much more sporty. I decided I wanted a manual car so that's the way I went, I may be tempted with a pdk in the future, but more likely to go 997 GT3

Whichever you go for its a great car, whatever I've said above re the tip box or what others say it is still a very fast in either version

Try both then decide. Although if you know that you'd prefer to lose all boost while you slowly change gear, you can probably skip the "try both" step...hehe

If you stamp the throttle twice in rapid succession in the tip, it will select the most aggressive shift map. That's when things can get quite entertaining.

Ok, enough now...biggrin

Auto on my wife's X3, fine. Same on a Merc, Jag, Panamera / Cayenne, suits them just fine.

But the "can't change gear quick enough" line or the "loose boost while slowly change gear" is rubbish in my humble opinion.

How many Tiptronic GT2s or GT2 RSs did Porsche make ??

I rest my case judge

Edit to say....this in response to Auto, not PDK (which is fab !)

From wiki

According to official Porsche figures, the 997 Turbo accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds with the manual transmission, and 3.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S transmission.
