Just bought a 95 993 C4 from a dealer about 120 miles away, no complaints about the dealer, however I think I may have a problem.

I noticed that when I turn the engine off a fan of some kind in the engine bay continues to wirr away for about 10 mins after I've locked thr car. When I got home I just assumed it was because the car was hot after 120 miles on the A1.

I noticed at the weekend that from stone cold if I just switch the ignition on (not the engine)and then turn it off the same thing happens the fan spins for about 10 mins.

It appears to be coming from a black cowling in the top left hand corner of the engine. First Porsche so no idea about this, but a pal also has a 993 and his does not do this so assuming there is a problem

Any idea's?

It could well be the auxillary electric fan for the heater, but that should stop with the ignition being off.

Thanks for that BB your right, just turned the heater fan off in the car and started and stopped the engine and now it doesn't do it.

So I guess there is a wiring fault somewere. The dealer I purchased the car from have told me to get it sorted and forward the bill as they are 120 miles away.

Anybody know a good Porsche specialist or good auto electrician near Peterborough?

I had this problem with my car and it was the Rear heating fan which was running after the ignition was turned off.

I believe this is something to do with the engine cooling - i.e. the system senses that the engine is still hot when you park the car so it keeps that fan running for a short period to pull cooling air through the engine.

In my case it was also running when the engine was cold or it carried on running indefinitely until I unplugged the fan.

Somebody on the forum came up with a solution - the problem was caused by sticking relay.

The relay for this fan is in the fuse box in the engine compartment on the left-hand side - Very close to the fan in fact. From memory I think the cover for the box is held on by three plastic nuts which have a slot in the head for a screwdriver if they are more than finger tight. The relay that runs this fan is a big black one and the suggestion on the forum was that I tap the relay with the handle of a screwdriver to release the stuck connection. I removed the cover to the fuse box whilst the fan was running, tapped the relay, and sure enough the fan went off.

If you do this and the fan carries on running try pulling relay out and the fan should go off. You could then take the cover off the relay and see if the connection is stuck or try replacing with a new one.

In my case I tapped the relay only on that one occasion to unstick it and the fan has never stayed on since. But I have bought a new spare relay as there are three further relays of the same type in the front fuse box for controlling the front heat fans and the oil cooler fan so it was worth having a spare. In fact if tapping your relay doesn't solve the problem you could swap it out for one in the front to confirm that a faulty relay is causing the problem at the back.

Of course your problem may be completely different but the fault does sound similar to mine.

Good luck

Check with your OPC (or PCGB at Reading) that your car had the 993 engine compartment wiring loom recall. Give them your VIN number and they will check their database.

It might not be due to this, but it is worth checking anyway...

Some good advice. The fan is intended to circulate air after the engine is switched off and disperse residual heat. Likely causes of it running on are a faulty temp sensor or dodgy relay as described previously.

Engine wiring harness is always worth checking.

Thank you Gents,

It was indeed the heater fan relay, a magic tap with the screwdriver did the trick. Many thanks. bow

I've also sent off the car details regarding the possible outstanding recalls.

Try TWG Motorsport (not sure what motorsport they do) in Peterborough, they have been around for quite a long time, other than that I think you are on your own with nearby specialists.
