mechanical speedo drive s1

Some years ago my Speedo cable fell out, I put it back in and held it there with a cable tie, it lasted one day. On closer inspection it turned out the cable had snapped off inside the gearbox. Now with the body lifted access is better but I cannot pull the end out infact the plastic surrounding the cable is just getting smaller and more dog eared, has anyone had this problem before ? The circllp defanatly not in place. I'm thinking about drilling it out but I recall a thread some time ago talking about an oil seal behind the cable I can't find I decent close up diagram of the mechanical drive version , has anyone got any ideas ?

I'm gonna search for my old Capri Haynes manual to see if it can shed any light on the Speedo drive. Give me a chance to sober up by the morning, & I'll let u know if I can find anything.

Took me a while to dig out the manuals, but managed to find the following:

Are you absolutely certain you have removed the circlip/snap ring retainer? The cable outer & flange should just pull straight out.
If the broken cable end is still inside the drive pinion, you may have to prise off the cover with a flat- bladed screwdriver, then you can pull out the pinion.

Note that the exploded pics are for Type B, but I believe Type N are the same arrangement.
And yes, there should be an oil seal/ gasket at the end of the cable.

Glen ,that's fantastic I have scoured the internet and come to the general conclusion that the Speedo drive gear cap will have to be removed and the whole lot pulled out to have a proper look, but those pictures speak volumes thank you, I think I'm going to loose all the oil in the process but a oil change probably overdue anyway, and yes defanatly no circlip, god only knows what's going on in there but at least I have a start point now

Speedo gear is out the end is mullered, anyone know a good parts supplyer ? I have found a few but none list a 24 tooth pinion, knowing my luck its super rare

I've resurrected this thread to find out if you found a supplier for the drive gear pinion? Old Skool Ford may be able to help, or try the Capri Owners Club forum.
Also our new friend with the Cossie S needs our help.

Thanks Glenrobbo - I have responded with another question on the other thread. There is still a protruding piece coming out of the 'cap - item 24 (from the second pic down on your post) on mine (see other thread, second photo). Any idea if this is just a guide for the speedo cable, and the cable has snapped... or if something attaches to it?

If the cable is snapped, I will need to take off the cap and potentially get a new drive/cable (are they one piece?). Space is limited - would I need to drop the exhaust or could I do it in place?

To get hold of a gear I would try ringing a few gearbox reconditioners.

Motomobil.com a ford parts supplyer in Germany . I have ordered the gear and its on its way . This is the only place I could get one with 24 teeth.

Item 24 is just a cap but it does hold the gear in place.

To clarify, you don't need to remove the cap (24) to fit the speedo cable, it fits on the outside of the cap inside the 'dished' bit, retained by a circlip.
Hope this makes sense.
The cap retains the drive gear pinion in place, it's just pressed in with sealant, so if it NEEDS to be removed, carefully lever it out evenly a bit at a time to avoid damage.
Your photo is not clear, but it's possible a portion of the old cable may still be left in the end of the drive gear pinion, so you may have to delve deeper to get it out.
I'm hoping your original cable has been carefully removed from the gearbox and tucked safely out of the way for the 24v conversion.
