Speeding bikers face new cameras
Discussion
Police in North Yorkshire are using new technology in a further bid to cut the number of motorcycle casualties.
The Autovision system not only records the speed and number plate of the motorbike but also takes an image of the rider's face.
Officers say this means there can be no dispute over who was riding a speeding motorcycle.
The system will be used this weekend to monitor riders coming into Scarborough for the bike races at Oliver's Mount.
Mini-computer
Using Autovision means that a second officer is not needed at speed check points to stop offenders.
The camera records what the officer sees and stores it on a mini-computer.
The information is later downloaded and will lead to either fixed penalty tickets or a court appearance for extreme speeders.
Assistant Chief Constable David Collins revealed that 12 riders have died on the county's road this year compared with 26 at the same point in 2003.
Reducing the death toll has been one of the force's priorities for 2004
"Twelve is still 12 too many," he said, "and each represents a tragedy whose impact spreads out far beyond the family and friends of the deceased.
"But none the less we can take some encouragement from the results of the get-tough campaign."
Mr Collins added that one in four riders caught speeding in North Yorkshire turns out to have a criminal record.

And how, in god's name, can you get a photograph of sufficient quality to stand up as evidence in court, of my angelic features whilst wrapped in the customary Arai with dark tinted visor???.....X-rays??
I defy anyone to positively identify anybody through the visor of a full face helmet at 30ft let alone a hundred yards plus..........
mindboggling

Damn !!!.....it all makes sense now. I kept wondering why dealers are overflowing with "retro" pudding basin lids....maybe they're being made compulsory and we've not yet been informed.......
Or even better, the growing trend for flip front lids (Caberg et al). Wonder if they're all fitted with little devices that when radar detected, they automatically flip open and voila........NICKED!!!
I think i may have hit on something here.....anyone got any contacts at the home office i could suggest it too??

What tehis that supposed to mean?
I think that's supposed to reinforce the old stereotype that anybody who rides a motorcycle is a gun toting, drug snorting, bat eating Hells Angel who will rape your granny and eviscerate your children.
Wonder how many car drivers stopped have criminal records?

or did he mean "ends up with a criminal record"......
after all, speeding is the worst crime possible

on a serious note I have to say I really find Mr Collins remark offensive, almost like riding a bike means I'm a criminal. wonder what other pre conceptions he has???
good point tubinthug. ive done only 4000 miles this year compaied to 6500 last year
"Assistant Chief Constable David Collins revealed that 12 riders have died on the county's road this year compared with 26 at the same point in 2003."
So 12 riders have died this year but how do we know they were all down to speed?
teh could have all died at the legal limit with cars pulling out on them or falling off on diesel or damaged roads!
Lets see the evidence that these deaths were soley down to speed
