Kona Cinder Cone - Rejuvenation Project

Afternoon Gang,
I'm the proud owner of a 2006 Kona Cinder Cone.
It's had a pretty hard life, and is rather worn out and clunky - but I do still like it, so wondered what the options were to 'rebuild' it phoenix style into a trendy street machine.
What would you do with it? Its currently used most days commuting to and from work, as well as weekends on a path by the coast, so needs to be fit for purpose, but I'll consider most things!
I think it will need new pedals (as they go clunk, clunk, clunk) as I pedal. The gears need replacing I guess as they are a bit crunchy and slip a bit. The handlebar rubbers are ripped. The brakes were never much cop, despite being disk brakes (aren't they better?).
The best idea's will be compiled into a shopping/todo list and I will then post up photo's of the progress!

It's never been serviced, or *hangs head* cleaned in the past 7 years that I've had it...
I'm pretty sure the gears and pedal shaft/bearings are kaput.
Will stick some photo's up later when at home.
Performance wise, I'd like the pedals/gear changes to not grind, crunch or slip.
Brakes, they've never really impressed me - especially when when they are pretty useless - so would love to have much better braking.
Weight wise it feels pretty heavy, whats the options to lighten this sort of bike? Ditch the front suspension and fit lighter wheels?

Looking HERE the spec is middle to low end, cable discs etc.
First off is probably strip and clean the running gear, you might be surprised at how well it works when clean, lubed and set up correctly.
Then look at the rest and decide whether throwing any more money at it would be worth while for what you want as the final bike.

sounds like you could end up with Triggers broom!..unless it has a particularly strong sentimental attachment I would just replace the whole bike with a new one, if you have access to Cycletowork etc makes it cheap to do so up to £1k. I'm pretty sure the gears and pedal shaft/bearings are kaput.

9 speed Deore groupset for £159 on ebay albeit with no brakes but cable discs are fine and have a massive advantage of being easy to rebuild as there is no faff with brake fluid so new pads and cables should be all you need, sounds like they just needed setting up or the discs/pads were contaminated?
The rest is up to you, everything should be serviceable with some TLC. For £100 you can get some nice new wheelset from Bike Discount too, XT hubs on 317 rims for £122 is borderline theft! Plenty good enough for most trails. Just over £275 spent and pretty much a new bike. You can go hunting on singletrackworld and the like for new bars and things if you want as there are second hand bargains galore over there...
