Evening chaps,

So I have had a 2007 cayman S for 20 months and love it, and I also have a 10month old..

The wife has just highlighted that when she goes back to work next month I will have a problem taking the little one to nursery on my way to work as she goes the other direction. ( air bag in the front and also its not much of a family car)

She has suggested moving to a 911 that will take a baby seat in the back, since my budget is about £24k do you think its a wise buy to go for a pretty high miler gen1 997 c2 or c2s? I'm not a fan of the 996 looks/interior so its either the 997 or dare I say it a 2007+ model M3.

I have read a good few of the stories of 997 engine issues since I hear they can also affect my cayman.

Is it worth the risk for an early 997 or should I be sensible and step into an M3 for a few years until the Gen2 997 drops a bit more?

Cheers

Russ

As a parent of two young kids, trust me and got for a four door I'm afraid. Putting a kid in and out in a child seat will soon become tiresome

Ha! So the 2x back seats in the 911 are useless for kids really ? smile

Depends how old the kids are, may be hard work with a 10 month old to be honest, older kids no problem at all.

Can't you just switch the airbag off or get Porsche to disable it?

My friend has 3 kids and a Cayman S.

His solution? A Honda FRV for kiddy ferrying duties. smile

I think I can disable it at the dealer but the wife pointed out that it'll only end up being a car for the odd drive on my own going forwards as we can't get us all in for any family trips etc, hence the idea to stick with a porsche and move to one with a bit more space.

Change the car and keep the wife.

Most womenfolk would make you chop the Cayman in for something practical and sensible, your mrs' idea of practical and sensible is a 911. Just buy it and blame her if it doesn't work out.

Similar story here, traded an MX5 for an 996 as the wife was about to return to work. We had a 2 year old and a 9 month old at the time. That was just over three years ago and its worked out great. Daughter is now 5, son is nearly 4 and they love being in the car. Some forward facing child seats fit fine (I'm just about to advertise a Mamas and Papas pro-tec which fits perfectly if interested, fits 997 too). Can be a pain lifting them in and out, I'd say we did that once a week on average. For the past year or so they have both been on booster seats and get themselves in and out. Never had them in the front and didn't get the porsche kit to disable the airbag.

We wanted a cab but I gather there isn't room in the back for forward facing child seats with the roof up. Now there are on boosters, we're thinking of finding a cab (well the wife is, I'd stay with coupe!)

So the wife is suggesting you get a 911?

I have 2 recommendations for you.

1- buy a 911
2 - keep the wife.

I was in the same situation myself and considered a turbo but ended up going for a GTR after test driving one. We still use one of the other 5 door cars on the drive for most of the baby carrying duties but it is nice to have the option to go out in the GTR as a family occasionally.

Me either!

My little lad sits very happily in the back of mine, albeit I have to say baby seats do not recline as much in a 911 than in the family workhorse, so long journeys can be uncomfortable for him but we rarely go that far smile

A good 911, a great wife!!! You have it made my boy wink

I did exactly this. However, if its your only car a 911 isn't a true family car, you need something else. As an occasional/fun car that can carry the whole family though it is perfect.

"Occasional" Buggy in the boot (you can't fit regular ones, so need to choose carefully), baby in the back, wife in the front, sorted. But I'd not consider it as an everyday proposition to be honest. It would just be too much like hard work.

Engine issues no worse than the Cayman, same level of gamble.

My 911 story so far if you fancy a read... http://motorcloud.net/category/the-911-years/

Me either, only had two door cars for the last 5 years and used the 911 from 9 months, never bothered me in the slightest.

I use the 911 for transporting my ten month old to childcare etc, however it is only just for the two of us, and there is no way my wife could fit in the passenger seat as it is too far forward (and she is too tall). As others have said you need another practical car for proper family duties. It is just a matter of putting in a bit of extra effort and making it work.

I did the same, moved from a Boxster to a 911, nursery 3 times a week for two years, no problem with one little one, two might be a challenge though. Great thing about the 911 is that if your little one drops something it's very easy to pick up from the drivers seat, as is wiping their noses at the traffic light... Couldn't do this in a big family car. Certainly don't tire of getting him in and out. Lastly the rear window is brilliant for them, good vision, some coupes not great. Finally little guys fall asleep much easier in the back of the 911... Lots of noise etc... Go for it...

Get a Cayenne. What the new parents at work tell me is an 8lb baby comes with 800lbs of baby stuff. No way you'll fit everything you need into the 911.

Try to get one with the air suspension. I'm told it makes it real easy for new moms to lift the baby in and out of the thing. And the stroller. And the diaper bag. And 700lbs of the other stuff.

I already had my 3.2 when my son was born, he went in the front in a rear facing maxi-cosy seat - the 2 girls 4 & 7 went in the back and fit a treat in the the little bucket seats.

Its not THE most ideal car for loading in multiple youngsters, but its a darn site better than having to trade in for a scenic and having a 'My life is over' tattoo put across your forehead! wink

Sounds like your Mrs is a bit of a diamond to be honest. Get the 911 and just deal with installing the nipper in his seat every day - Win Win situation if you ask me!
