Back in love with my 996GT3! or am I............
Discussion
Well it' been a cold long winter and my car has been sitting in the garage for ages keeping warm, but as the months passed through its hibernation a little birdie kept on telling me I should sell it as I only use it for 6 months of the year on sunny afternoon hoons around, nice weekends away or trips in to Europe.
However I kept on trying to ignore the little birdie, but as the months passed i started thinking maybe she! is right and a change is on the horizon.
Well my new year’s resolution was to sell it after 5 happy years of motoring, so I put it up and had various PX deals and phone calls, but nothing came of it as the PX'ers were not of interest and the weather was a little to cold to tempt anyone to buy it for cold hard wonga.(Except one person who decide to buy a black one rather than my blue! No taste!)
Since the adverts expired I decided to take it out for a proper spin during the brief interludes of nice weather, and MY GOD i forgot the raw performance and agility it has.................. I’m In Love Again...............! The GT3 is certainly a special bit of metal.
But then the cold weeks have set back in, the roads are getting covered in salt and the temperatures is below zero so the car is back in its warm garage and that little birdie keeps on saying what about a change to something more useable in all weathers...
In Short....... when it’s sunny I love it........ when it’s wet cold damp windy I don’t....
When is this better weather coming so I can enjoy my car more an love it for what it can do, rather than thinking of selling all the time when I cant use it...LOL

I went through exactly the same love hate thing when I had my Westfield.
I changed the Westie for a Cayenne when the kids arrived, but now I get more family orientated company cars the Cayenne went 6 months ago to be replaced by my 996 C4s, at least it has back seats so everyone can go out in it and I don't feel as selfish as I did when it was only ever me that could go out in the Westfield, and only then when the sky was blue so I should have been doing more family things.

This is exactly the same for me Mark, but the way I look at it is this, in the winter I hate being outside washing cars in freezing weather, so why on earth would I put good money into an everyday car that I know at best will get a quick wash every few weeks, or at worst no wash at all from October until February. Just no point at all.
I enjoy driving in summer, on sticky tyres. I like to blast down some country roads up in Scotland or over in the Lake district, finishing up at a nice hotel with the missus to have a few beers outside in the sunshine.
When I'm not doing that I'll be at a trackday or away to watch my mates racing etc.
If I'm not out in the car I'll be pottering about on the drive tinkering on, or cleaning a car and chatting to the neighbours.
This is car ownership for me, not sliding about on greasey roads getting my pride and joy filthy.
Personally, the winter offers very little in the way of enjoyment car wise, hence I just switch off and do some decorating.
The money being tied up can bug you if you think about it, but it's not like you have an '09 997 carrera sitting there spewing money for each day that passes.
When I sold my 964 Turbo I told myself "Right, I'm not putting £25k back into a toy I hardly use". I didn't either. I put £35k into one.

I honestly don't know where you'd go from the GT3 though. Everything else is too sanitized apart from something that would still have to be a summer toy.
Stick with the '3 and ignore the little birdie! Summer is just around the corner!

I know the feeling!! I bought my 997c2s in November and went offshore 2 days later, By the time i got back the carp weather was here so that was me in my E class for the winter, so i started to think i should sell " Cherry " but i know that when i get home this time it will all be worth it!!
Is a bit of a shame, 911s are great fun on slippy roads. I understand why you'd want to keep a 3 pampered, but I think you're missing out on the 6 months you won't use it.
I have the same relationship with my motorbike, I get no pleasure from it when the grip levels are variable (is a spring to autumn toy) - but my 911 is great fun in all weathers.

All good comments and agreed i am probably missing out on some slip sliding fun in the wet, but just dont want to plaster the poor car in lots of road dirt / salt / crap etc.
Ive got the Landrover and Audi for the poor weather anyway.
Techarts are going on this weekend to see what they look like.
19" ones of these

This is indeed my thoughts also, and why I havent put them on the car in the last 12 months of buying them! But thought might aswell have a look to see if I like them, as Project Cayman is still on the back burner at the mo'

Jackwood has run his 996 GT3 through the winter on replacement wheels (and winter tyres) I think. Maybe worth contacting him to get the low down.
Fwiw, when I had mine, through the winter if there was a break in the weather I'd take it out just for a gentle half hour run to keep the oily bits moving. The car seemed to like it, after a long spell in the cold it was like getting in something ancient, the car moaning and groaning it's displeasure about being woken from it's slumber, upto temps and it was fine. I kept it outside under a cover.
