911 Turbo and M96/97 Carrera engine life expectancy?
Discussion
How many miles should I expect these engines to last 'on average' before needing some fairly major work (work costing £2-3K and more) or even needing complete rebuild or replacement?
There's someone on Rennlist with a 996 Turbo with over 300k miles on it, which got me wondering about the above.
Anyone on here got a very high mileage 911 and can share their experience of work they've had done to get it there?

I expect my engine to last a long time - however, I also think that £2-3k bills might be more frequent than just engine work.
My turbo is pretty reliable, but it would only need new suspension / rads all round with brakes / a major service with clutch etc. to be getting close to those kind of figures.
My annual service usually seems to average £1500 - £2k, regardless of whether it's due a minor or major because there is usually "other" stuff which needs to be sorted (last year, leaking steering rack).

Point taken about the bills, but in this instance I was just thinking about engine work specifically, which I guess would ususally be because of some kind of engine wear related failure. The costs you speak of definitely back up using a Hartech maintenance plan (or the like), which costs £102 a month for a Turbo doing up to 6k miles a year.
How long should the K16 turbos last before replacement by the way, assuming proper care is taken?

As for the engine I would expect these to get some star ship mileage (150k +)before anything major needs doing presuming you change oils and service regularly.

Do you track the car at all? i can understand engine wear and tear but things like leaking steering racks strike me as things which shouldn't be happening on a car of this supposed quality? christ my 2000 polo seems more reliable.

Yes, you'd think there should be the odd year where nothing needs replacing like brakes and tyres and there's just a minor service for £300 or so?Do you track the car at all? i can understand engine wear and tear but things like leaking steering racks strike me as things which shouldn't be happening on a car of this supposed quality? christ my 2000 polo seems more reliable.

To answer your questions requires someone with a crystal ball. The costs you speak of definitely back up using a Hartech maintenance plan (or the like), which costs £102 a month for a Turbo doing up to 6k miles a year.

Generally the turbos last a long time. They are however prone to premature failure just like any other component. But they do not appear to suffer from premature failure.
All you can do is find a good car, take care of it which among other things means change the oil at reasonable intervals, use a good oil (approved of course), and give the turbos time to cool down as the owners manual advises.
With a little luck the turbos will last as long as the engine and the engine will last as long as you own the car.
