Can I install a 997 standard shifter in my 996mk2?
Discussion
997gt3.2 normal shifter, fine in my opinion, quite precise/short/mechanical. . . think the short-shift would be too notchy, cost in Spain from OPC €149.52+VAT for the part , I fitted to my 996 turbo. . . . LIKE
PART # 99742401000
Enjoy
But, it is a bit stiff when cold
I usually have the opposite problem

Yes you can, I did it and it was relatively straight forward. One thing you will need if you don't buy the 997 lever brand new from OPC is the centring tool for the gear lever. This holds it in neutral position whilst you are fitting the cables. It's only available from Porsche and the part number is 997.424.383.01. For the cost, are you sitting down?
£2.01 but that's ex-VAT
Fitted, it is not as short as a short shift one being some 15% shorter than stock, (SSK is circa 30%), but a lot of people don't like the short shift kit any way.
For getting to the gearshift
Ignore all the stuff around changing the insides of the shift unit; that's for the short shift kit, you're only interested in how to get the old one out. Once out, just drop the 997 one in place and reverse the process. check and double check the alignment of the cables to make sure you put them in exactly the right place. Mark them accurately and count the ribs a few times for where the cables seat.
