It really depends on what you want and many other variables, but really, this is the answer.Although, I would add a good Carrera 3.2 as well.
have fun looking.

Will 20k get you a 964 or 993 thats worth getting and isnt a money pit ?
Or a 3.2 for that matter, good ones with a few miles on them now start at about 24k.I remember that guards 964 c2 not so long ago, 33k miles and up for £19,995 and it kind of seemed a lot of money at the time.

Will be at Oulton, but not as early as the others. What about you.
I so very nearly bought a 56 plate 997 C2 with navigation for £19995... Full history, but 88k miles.
So yes, there are 997s out there for that money, but ultimately I didn't trust the engine so went with a 996 with a rebuilt Hartech engine for 5 grand less.
I still sometimes wish I'd gone for that 997.

I bought a 2003 996 C2 Tip for £19k with 44k on the clock in December 2012. As this is my first Porsche I went for the "simplest" mechanical arrangement without the danger of being overreved. I was tempted to go for a late 993 as an air cooled model is supposed to be more reliable. However, all the ones I looked at in this price window had higher mileages.
The water cooled has its disadvantages in that it has about 22 litres of coolant and more connection points than the average domestic heating system.
