Hi GermanHeads,

I have to post my first DM link :
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2059745/Br...

Living in the county Hessen of Hessen, I am not very familiar with MOD bases in Lower Saxonia or Rhineland,

can you tell me where some kind of airport / landing strip will be left ?

I am asking this because we still have no permanent Drag Strip in Germany,

and these locations maybe would be a possibility for converting.

As an example in NRW, Weeze used to be a RAF base, but was taken over as a public airport (Ryanair fly there claiming it's Dusseldorf)!
Not sure there's many airstrips used by the British Army around Hessen - that was the border between the British Army & the US Army, places like Wiesbaden etc. The US Army are staying where they are of course!
I'm not sure about north Hessen, I'll have a look later on!

Hi Brendan,

I think you got me wrong there, I am not looking for airfields in Hessen

but in Rhineland and Lower Saxonia, still used by british troops but in the withdrawl plan.

There's none in Rheinland Pfalz as far as I know; the RAF/Army only came as far south as Koeln, and even then they've been gone from the Rheintal for many years.
Guetersloh is the only one I know of, but I think that may be NRW!

As the RAF have been out of Germany for a while don't think there are many active if any airfields. Didn't have that many any don't think. Gutersloh I think is still an emergency runway. Laarbruch became Weeze, Geilenkirchen is still used for AWACS so that only then leaves Wildenrath and Bruggen. Think Bruggen/Elmpt still has a runway but not sure if it is used.

former RAF Brüggen, Javelin Barracks does indeed have a runway

hardly even counts as Germany though, it's about 100yds from the Dutch border on three sides

Wildenrath is now a test track for Siemens monorail.
I was there commentating a Dragster Show many years ago when the MOD had just moved out,
it was a VERY big festival organised by MAMA concerts, Harley-Davidson of Germany and......
....the Hells Angels MC, no kidding, a very strange alliance but it worked.
Deep Purple, Bonnie Tyler and other great names on stage, Dragster Show (with track),
Biker fest, Stunts, 3 cranes for Bungee stuff including rocket (tied to ground then shot in sky),
Jochen Schweizer Bunngee-jumping a Sportster 200ft etc etc.

This place is HUUUGE, I was looking for the HA camp, drove around the woods for one hour and gave up,
almost ended up lost, only got back to the fairground because I heard bass from the distance.
