I'm in the process of finalising the spec for my new Cayman, currently coming in about £60k...

Aqua blue metallic
20" Carrera Classic wheel
Sports seats plus
PDK
PASM
Sports Chrono
Sports Exhaust
Cruise control
Sport Design steering wheel
Telephone module
Park assist front and rear
Heated seats

Now the big question, to add PCM or not to add PCM... Cost is £2500 (including mandatory sound upgrade) and I'll never use it, but will not having it affect resale?

Thoughts?

I think I can guarantee that you won't get your 2500 back when you sell. So forget it.

If you don't opt for PCM, do you still get the large screen? If you do, I wouldn't bother with it but to be honest, PCM is seen as a must by OPC's when it comes to resale. I even opted for PCM in my Cayman R (through availability/deal rather than want!) and never use it, but feel it is important when I eventually sell. From new though, I doubt you'll get your money back on it!

PCM is such a simple easy to use system, I can't understand why you wouldn't spec it. If you can afford 60k then I'm sure you can afford 62. . And that's the before haggle price, you'll get that car with pcm for 58.

I won't use PCM because I rarely drive anywhere where I don't know where I'm going! And the £60k doesn't include my agreed discount...

You will get a lower price when it comes to selling the car, PCM is a must from that point of view.

Just so you know, there is a new blue coming out later in the year called Sapphire Blue, it looks very similar to Aqua.

Not 2.5k though, that's the point.

I'm not a big fan of nav, but I'd spec it. Dealers will mark you down or turn you away and private sale will prove slow.

I speccd it purely because it gave the full iPod/iPhone integration plus it has an internal hard disk which you can fill with MP3's via a memory stick. The normal head unit is mini jack connection only via the glovebox only. No control from the head unit.

If I wasn't bothered about music, I wouldn't have had the PCM....

but now there's CDR plus which has full iPOD, DAB and Sound Package Plus for just over £1000

And if you like music - but don't need Nav - it's probably the one to go for ....

"Does it have PCM?" was the first question I was asked both by my local OPC and most people (who completely failed to read the advert) when I was selling my Cayman.

I think you can get away with not having PCM on the Cayman R because it's "a track weapon" and people in the market will be all about the weight saving with nylon door pulls, etc.

My gut feeling both from when I was looking to buy and when I was looking to sell is that having it makes the cabin a nicer place to be. It feels commensurate with the value of the car, and like it or not a load of prospective buyers expect to see.

You certainly won't see £2500 back come resale, but you will probably expose yourself to a much wider market than you otherwise would by having it, and that has a value unless your time is disposable.

I would however concede that it is by pound a waste of money, and the nav doesn't really compare to a TomTom or equivalent. That said it is nice having it built in, even for those rare journeys where you don't know where you're going.

I would spend the money on full leather interior instead .. not many cars can have this, and it makes the interior really special.

any old Renault or Ford can be had with sat nav, but none can be had with full leather interior

I would not bother with it and save £2500

I am looking for a Boxster 981 without satnav as they are quite a bit cheaper but not £2500 cheaper!!.
I have a car with satnav built in and I hardly ever use it so for me its not a 'must have'.
I would rather spend the money on things like cruise control, multi function wheel, keyfree, heated seats etc

That wasn't available when I specc'd my car. May have gone for that but not to worry.....the price you pay for being first on the list!!

Hmm, thanks for pointing this out. I'd didn't notice that CDR+ was available or what it does, but this might be a viable alternative to ridiculously expensive navigation. CDR+ is c.GBP1,000 and includes the sound package speakers (c.GBP400 separately). So this saves c.GBP 1,500 vs the GBP 2,500 that you pay for PCM including the compulsory sound package.

saves more as PCM doesn't include DAB radio
