Boxster Reliability Advise
Discussion
I think it would be fair to say that it's generally recognised that the 2.7 is the most reliable of that engine type - less stress, less heat etc.
The IMS issue has been done to death and, whilst there are issues, the number of failures is few, you'd have to be really unlucky.
There are some that would have you believe that 996 / 986 /987/ 997 cars engines are made of chocolate and will fail the moment you turn the key!
The forums are full of panic, theories and, in some cases, utter s
t. Everyone talks about the failures but very, very few have actually ecxperienced it and there are those out the who'll talk up the problem to sell "solutions".
Hartech & Autofarm are the reliable and sensible voices when it comes to the issues and you'll get straight forward & honest answers from both.
As a point to note - Hartech haven't yet needed to rebuild a 2.7 engine - probably all you need to know to make your choice!
In 2005 the IMS bearing and carrier were beefed up and made much stronger, as a result if you can push the funds to a 2007 2.7 car with a good service history you'll not go far wrong.

......well that because the later 2.7 is newer. Some of the older 2.7's are now 14 yrs old?
Indeed and now the post 2005 are as old as 8 years old, what's your point? Given that post 2005 S models have been rebuilt and 2.7 models haven't I would again say that it's a pretty good advert for the 2.7.
