Oil Pressure Sender on a Go-Slow
Discussion
Been meaning to replace the oil pressure sensor for some time now. The original sender was showing the ravages of time; the rubber cover was badly perished, allowing corrosion of the steel casing. The pressure readings were OK though (30 psi at idle and 45-50 psi at 2500rpm). Being a bit of a pedant I decided to replace the sender with a new unit from David Gerald, not cheap but the closest thing to the original sender. The first unit arrived last week but, once fitted, this initially provided a zero reading but, after 15-20 seconds slowly jerked its way up to 50 psi at a 1200 rpm fast idle. I refitted my original sender and, hey presto, got an instant reading of 50 psi on turning the key.
I called David Gerald who agreed that the symptoms pointed to a faulty unit and they immediately mailed me a replacement. This arrived on Saturday and, when I fitted thi today, guess what? - same symptoms. With this one the guage starts to register after 10-12 seconds but again, it takes another 20 seconds or so to inch its way up to a steady reading of 50 psi.
I've reverted to the original unit and this continues to provide an instant healthy reading but I would be interested to hear if anyone else has suffered the same symptoms after fitting a replacement sender. I seem to remember that Jimed experienced similar problems about 3-4 years ago but, without the Search facility, I can't confirm this.

Many thanks Swimmer27, that's done the trick. On your advice took the car for a longish run this morning and, when I got back on the drive, left the car for a couple of hours and on starting it again - a quick build up to 50 psi. It must need time to prime the sender unit before it gives a rapid readout.
Thanks again.
