I have just sent out some cheques with 2012 on instead of 2013. can anybody confirm they are still okay to be paid in? I am pretty sure they are and that things changed a few years ago. I think there used to be a limit of 6 months on them but that has now changed, is that correct?

Thanks

I wasn't aware that 6 month rule had changed, so would also be interested to know the answer.

Legally a cheque is valid for six years but banks have tended to reject them after six months, if anybody actually notices the date.

In practice if the date is a year old they may be fine or they may get rejected, there's no way of knowing u til it happens.

The law is different to what banks do in practice.

Yes it is, which is why I said that the legal limit is six years but the usual practice is six months. What point are you trying to make?

But note that cheques from NS&I specifically state they are valid for three months from date of issue.
