My MIL (80 yrs old) wants to move house and has a shortfall of £40k. I could find this extra money but would want to "ringfence" it in case the house had to be sold to fund residential care. Is this fairly straight forward?

Go to a lawyer or conveyancer and get them to draw up either a legal charge or note your interest with the Land Registry, which ever they advise. I am not a lawyer.
