Needs a new compact camera, any thoughts on this?

Bought one last year been really happy with it so far. Image quality is good and I like the panorama feature and the iauto+ setting is good for point and shoot stuff. The manual controls are good but still struggling with manual focus. Not found my way around the scene modes.

Video is OK but not great for stuff like motor sports it seems to be bit jerky with fast moving subjects.

Also seems to get good reviews. Once I've saved a few pennies I'll be after one to replace a Samsung WD2000

Looks alright - before you pull the trigger, give some thought to the new Fujifilm X20 due in a few weeks time.

Mrs Get wants my Canon S95, so I'm looking at the RX100... but am also waiting to read reviews of the X20, which looks good (ESP as it has an optical viewfinder... My main bugbear with compacts is the lack of one).

That Fuji looks lovely. My only concern is how pocketable it would be.

Are those panorama shots easy to get? I currently have a Panny TX20 which has a Pan mode but its a bit clumsy to use.

Thinking of getting an RX100 ahead of a months trip to China in Sept and passing the TX20 onto the missus.

I found them pretty straightforward. I didn't read the manual so had to work it out through trial and error. It was as simple as setting to panorama on the dial. The camera showed what direction to sweep in and you click the button and sweep in the direction indicated. The only bit I found tricky was the speed of sweep, I kept going too slow but eventually got used to the required speed.

The direction of sweep can be changed in the menus as required

I absolutely love mine. I bought it about 3 months ago for when I need a small camera and not my DSLR!

As far as I can see, it's pretty much the best POCKET camera you can buy at the moment. The Fuji X10, X20, X100 and suchlike are nice cameras, but they aren't pocket cameras... and my opinion is that if it won't fit in a pocket, then you might as well take your DSLR which will give you better snaps anyway.

I have found my RX100 very easy to use, nice menus, good battery life, and really well made. Feels very solid and metal all round.

I travel a fair bit and wanted something discreet for snapping when out and about rather than looking like a muggable tourist with DSLR, and a lot of my snaps are at night, in the street, and in bars/restaurants etc so low light ability was really, really important to me, which is where most compact cameras totally fall to bits.

I'm pleased to report that the big sensor and F1.8 lens absolutely deliver when the light drops.

This quick street snap below was taken handheld in complete night time darkness, with just the lights on the building for illumination.



I would go as far as to say you would even get a shot like that out of an entry level DSLR with F3.5 kit lens.

I had the pleasure of a friends X100 for a week and I really liked it

I could certainly live with any of those similar Fuji models, and enjoy them.

Like you, I considered the Fuji X range against the RX100 when buying a compact, but for me, I just had to get the smallest one for shorts/jeans pocket type situations.

Also consider the Lumix LX7 - for the money it's hard to beat (<$300 USD)

Depending on which part of the world you're in, it can't be beaten when Panasonic discount it to $299.
