It's getting near the time to replace the tyres on my 993 - 205/50/17s on the front and 255/40/17s on the rear (Pirelli N3 fitment all round). Does anyone know of any good tyres deals around at the moment? (particularly around London/Sussex/Surrey areas). What brand would you recommend or definitely avoid? Will even consider a set of part-worns with very good tread remaining (will consider single tyres or even replacement wheels but must be the Targa split rims). And final question - just how important is the N fitment or is it just a marketing ploy? Thoughts welcome.

Avoid those Pirellis with the red writing on the side. They'll put you into a hedge in the wet.

Pilot Sports, Rainsports or Continentals.

N-ratings are a marketing scam.

I've been running non N rated Michelin Cups for a couple of years now on my 993. Best upgrade I've done, not sure about those sizes though, regular continental sports are good also........

Best deals I've seen are from Pneus Online, Dutch company send them right away, used twice as have friends here and easy to deal with if anything goes wrong smile

moved from contis to michelins and won't be moving back

I have to say that the michelins were incredible in the alps last year, wet, dry, massive inclines, huge shrap off camber drops .. you name it.

Whichever tyre you decide on (Michelin Pilot Sport for me), I found Event tyres are hard to beat for price and service. They will turn up at your home or workplace and fit them for you. The fitter who has worked on a couple of my cars, treated them very carefully.

Best, minimal hassle, good value for money, tyre changing service I have experienced.

Thanks for your feedback so far - so Excel tyres seem to be getting a few recommendations. I would welcome some more feedback on whether the N Rated tyres are a "must have" for a 993 - or as one contributor has said, is it a marketing ploy? Also, if anyone has any very good part-worns that fit the bill or excellent condition original split-rims for a 993 Targa, then I'd certainly be interested to know about that too. Thanks again for all your comments so far.

Anything except the Pirellis designed in the 1990s.

Bridgstone S02 KZ N3 are superb for the track (and hot/dry)

Uniroyal Rainsport2 for cold/damp (UK) conditions, if you can source the rears.

I don't think they make Sessantas in 205/50/17s - I have a set in 18s and they have been very good in the wet/dry, but ultimately not as good as the above two on the 993 if you only do dry (or wet) miles.

Michelin PS2 are good all-rounders.

If you only do dry miles, get the Bridgestones. They are good enough in the rain if, heaven forbid, you are caught out in a shower.

....and N-rated are not necessary for a 993.

Look - here is mine on Vredesteins, and it's not on fire.

Another vote for mich pilot sports. Great grip and feel in all weathers.

In fact, the level of grip available on what is a 17 year old car still surprises me!

A pigeon on your back window recommended Bridgestones?
