I recently suffered the ignominy of being unable to purchase an Orange SIM card on contract for my iPhone because of an Experian credit check. WTF?!

It's taken me nearly a month to get hold of the report through Experian and, surprise surprise.... It shows that I've never borrowed a penny or have any form of debt whatsoever (which is correct). I don't even have a mortgage and own my home outright.

However, this appears to be bad news - or at least so I hear - if you have a superb record showing nothing but zeros, it actually works against you.

Is there anyone here who knows about such things? If so, what can I do to change this strange state of affairs?!

I'd like to have a contract SIM - and it's infuriating that this clunky system has barred me from doing so.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Yeah unfortunately places will treat no credit history almost as badly as bad credit history.

I think the best thing to do is to get a credit card, even if the only ones you can get are the shocking interest ones, and use it for something small each month and make sure to pay it off. This way you begin to build a credit history and as long as you pay it off in full each month it won't cost you anything.

It'll take time though.

I have a MasterCard with my bank - but it gets paid off in full each month automatically. No good?

Then I'm stumped. If you have had credit in the past but never missed payments etc there's no reason why you should get turned down that I know of.

I was under the impression you had not been using a credit card (or other credit) so had no credit history at all. Did you get the full credit report from Experian with a score and everything?

My MasterCard is a credit card (I think) but it gets paid off in full each month automatically by the bank (it's their card). There's no mention of the card within the Experian report.... I spend roughly £60k a year on the card. I don't have the choice to pay off only part of the balance - it has to be paid in full. Still a credit card?

You could try Three who I believe have a more generous approval rate. I also think that O2 don't decline outright but if you fail the credit check they ask for a deposit?

You say that you have a superb record, but you don't. You don't have a record.

At least with a person with adverse credit they know who they are dealing with. With no record, there is zero track record of maintaining credit which is what they want to see.

Yes. I can see this.

Really irritating. I'm worth a few bob and I can't get a feckin £15 a month sim card. Just because of some poxy report I've never heard of before.

Just get a GiffGaff sim and buy goody bag, then set it to auto-renew every month.

You need to think like the way a creditor does.

Your credit file does not tell them how much you are worth, how much money you have in the bank or that you own your house outright. It may be annoying but they don't know you from Adam.

In todays society, having zero credit is pretty rare so its always going to raise flags.

What score did Experian give you?

My credit rating dipped when I bought a second house, regardless of the fact I put down £50k deposit. I have a friend who earns £25k and an expired CCJ who has a rating of 999, like wise I have a mate who earns £80k with all debts paid off and who's rating is only 600. It is subjective.

I have the report in front of me but can't see any score of any type.

It has:

Name, date of birth, address (incorrect postcode)

E1 Current Address (incorrect postcode) since 2008
E2 previous Address since 1996
C1 Credit Account Information and then a load of stuff about Vodafone. All zero balances. No idea why this is there, I left Vodafone years ago
P1-P7 searches that have been done. These are from insurance companies and include the Orange one. They have no data against them.
B1 Linked addresses - for some reason Vodafone is mentioned again

And that's it. No score that I can see. No mention of my bank or bank balance or any detail like that.

The words "incorrect postcode" are your problem - correct that and get connected.

Do you think that's it?

They've got my address right but are using the postcode from my previous address. Could it be that simple?

Yes.

If they can't trace you at the address, thats an instant decline.

you got it via Credit Expert, ie online Experian?
There should be a score from 500-999 in the top right of the screen.

I got it directly from Experian. A downloadable PDF file.
