Subaru Impreza GB270

cheers podie - unsure about the handling just now - feels a bit loose and too many knocking noises coming from the wheels.....
other than that - plenty power and fairly understated as well - low exhaust noise gives it a nice burble when idling.
trying to keep the miles down on it but we'll see how long that lasts

I didn't try out an sti mate - I'm not sure why
to be honest I was after a spec d wrx for a while with the plan of making it look like this
but this appeared and by then the bullet was well and truly bitten by the low miles and the spec! Also was unsure about the head gasket issues and if sti's were more at risk...

Also was unsure about the head gasket issues and if sti's were more at risk...well, not been doing much the car since I bought it to be honest - the knocking sound has been temp fixed with the application of white lithium grease on the struts, which is a known issue and a known temp fix, but someon said it should be good for a a few 10,000 miles....which to me is a more perm fix than temp
I managed to clobber the front splitter on a kerb though - brakes are suffering a bit from lack of use and maybe starting to seize up a bit, because of this. Never mind - some fibre glass and filler should fix the splitter.
enjoying the power in it to be honest - not the best cruising car for dual carriageways/motorways though - sometimes I feel that having a 6th gear would be a good thing as it sits about 3500rpm at 70mph. However, it has bags of torque and taking off in 5th is no problem at all.
All in all so good so far - MOT next week so will see how it goes

I didn't realise the gear ratios were so different on newage cars. Is the 6th in an STi any taller than the 5th in a WRX? My Classic in 5th only does around 2700rpm at an indicated 70mph.Not sure about ratios to be honest - the high revs isn't a bad thing really - it's still pretty quiet just a bit too revvy.
Will deffo keep an eye on the oil mate - had heard that some have suffered HG problems - hopefully mind will be ok - have a p38 range rover that has kept me spanners busy for the past 9 years - I had heard the scooby was bullet proof......sigh......

First off, nice car mate.
I'm on my second scoob. 1st i had for 8 years and when i sold it it had covered 120k. in the time i had it, it never missed a beat. Did track days, quarter miles and fast road use so it was used.
My second is a type r with 80k on the clocks and so far it's been great.
All i would say is look after it, don't go daft with performance mods and use decent oil/filters and it should be fine ( just like most powerful cars).
As for the gearing the 6 speed gearing was changed in the later cars to make it more comfortable on motorways. If it helps yours could be worse. My type r sits at 4500revs ish at 70mph, not comfortable at all.
Oh, also the spec d you mentioned is a STI toned down visually.
Just relax and enjoy it.
Johnny.

A wee update
I'm still enjoying the GB270 a heck of a lot - it was in partial hibernation over the winter time but been out to more use with the good weather we have been having.
Since I bought it, I have replaced all brake calipers, all struts and all springs. Wouldn't exactly say that the car is transformed but it stops when I want it to now and definitely knock free too which is a bonus.
Next job is to replace the arb bushes on the front - seems to be too much play at the moment and hoping that replacing them will cure this.
Other than that, it has been getting washed and polished to make it all shiny and my da polisher is slowly getting rid off the scratches.
