Why do these faults only become apparent when Im driving the wifes car with wifey sat in the passenger seat? hehe
Anyhow, little 2.5 986, foot planted "Im not thrashing it, I'm just clearing it out, dear".......when suddenly at around 5k it buried the 3series I'd just passed in a plume of smoke. Bugger. Luckily wife wasnt looking in the mirror at the time, but she did question why the people in the 3 series were looking at us a lot at the lights after the dual carriageway.
After that I drove normally and it was perfect.....didnt miss a beat and completely clear. So I'm wandering if these suffer with breather seperator's at all?
Thanks
Stuart

My guess is air-oil separator. If you google it you will see the symptoms are exactly as you describe.

Not too expensive to fix either. Sub £100 from memory for the part.

Edit: link http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_T...

Although the fact your car was fine afterwards; maybe not this?

Cheers TVR Man, reading that and some other google info it seems to be mega common....I'll get one ordered up tomorrow along with a new pair of rads (hers are weeping).

My old one did that once then never did it again. If it's been used on commutes I'd hold fire on doing anything for a bit. They come on the cam at 5k, might have just been clearing its throat.

Probably best that I have a nosey in the air filter box.....if its a breather seperator issue then I should see evidence of oil in there.Dont want to risk it progressing for fear of killing off a hego or two.

Hi,

You won't see any evidence of oil in there unless its been blown back into it. The oil to air separator connects at the throttle body and after the air box/filter so already in the engine. Best thing to do is see how difficult it is to get the oil filler cap off whilst the engine is running, then try it with engine off. The vacuum from the engine holds the oil filler cap on when failed.

There will not be any oil in the air filter box. The AOS connects right behind the throttle body and that's too far away for any oil vapor to travel.

Now if the AOS is acting up there can be oil at the throttle body, and on the butter fly valve.

Quick update.....
Today I replaced the air/oil seperator (The Porsche Shop supplied), and carried out an oil and filter change. Smoking issue seems fine now.....but I've not had chance to give it a proper drive out yet.....I'll update by the weekend.
I also replaced both radiators as one has been weeping for some time. Got a pair of Behr radiators (identical to the Porsche/Behr supplied units, same part numbers stamped on them etc) for £240 inc shipping, which seemed a good price to me (Advanced Radiators supplied)
The rear anti roll bar mounting bushes were a little squeaky, so I lightly greased them with some silicon grease.
Lastly I replaced the front brake pads as they were approx 80-90% worn.
All in all, a busy day today...but a happy Boxster and wife at the end of it smile

Ha ha yeah Im currently a Ford tech. I booked the day off work so I could get these jobs done and out of the way. It's just easier doing these jobs at my workplace as all my tools are there plus the use of a ramp is always nice smile

Nah not a RS500, this is the predecessor to the 500 ie a 3dr Sierra RS Cosworth.

Had the pleasure of seeing Stu's Cossie up close...to say it's immaculate does not do it justice! The engine bay is an absolute masterpiece cloud9

At Le Mans, I think he spent more time cleaning it than driving it!

Just to conclude this.....
Gave the Boxster some decent revs today.....completely clear all the way up to redline under load ie 3rd/4th gear, not a hint of smoke. Idle also seems smoother than it ever has before. AOS seems to have cured this one completely.
