996 rattle!

Friend has a 2001 3.4 996 and on start up there is quite a rattle coming from around the exhaust on the drivers side. Heat shield or similar?

Maybe. To be safe flat bed the car to a qualified tech and have him give a listen from under the car. It is is a heat shield or something similar he'll know soon enough.

Most likely one of the baffles that came loose inside the exhaust.

Have you checked the exhaust tips? Mine used to rattle on start up because they had come loose. Had them welded for not a lot of money. Put your foot or hand on the tail pipe tip and see if rattle stops. Obviously they get hot so wear an oven mit or something.
